TrebMaxx posted : It is more than just St. Charles. I live in Columbia and my pings are utter crap during prime hours. As soon as I think I can take a day off I am going with DSL because I don't think Charter is doing anything about this problem since it has gone on for so long. Charter used to be great for HSI up until about 4 months ago. I saw them lacking in the T.V. offerings but as long as my ping was good I was happy. I hate making the switch but it is coming due to the lack of any improvements in the time frame that they have had issues.

Carbon Unit posted : I still think the problem is oversubscription, the distance from your modem to the box should make no difference at all, thats something that effects DSL, I already proved my theory last fall when st charles had a big thunderstorm that knocked out all the power, I was still on batteries so i did a speed test (this was in the evening) and i was getting 5megs, due to the fact that many customers lost power to there modems, the next day I was connecting at about 200k, doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that the lines in st charles are oversaturated with users, they dont even have a backup to cover routine maintenance

TrebMaxx posted : I too mean no disrespect to any of the Charter techs that try to help on this forum, I thank them and appreciate their help. But I find it extremely annoying to be told to just keep on calling until they fix the problem. I have better things to do with my time than sitting on hold listing to how great Charter is when I have had issues over 3 months now. Then to be told the same old routine, remove router, power cycle modem...you don't think I have already tried that? I have tried to give Charter time to fix the problem. I am running out of patience. I have options fortunately, I just really don't want to have to go to the trouble (time) to use those options. I like Charter to be truthful, I am just tired of the B.S. Here are my gripes in case anyone of importance at Charter may read this.
Number 1 on my list is the HSI which is non existent and getting worse Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday it runs great.I don't pay $60 dollars a month for weekends.
Number 2 - The T.V. reception sucks on my digital package, although it varies.
Number 3 - No HDTV in my area, no DVR as well. I asked my local office last year and was told this summer(05), well it isn't here yet on both.
So as I keep getting more and more dissatisfied I look at my options. Mediacomm in my area have sporadic problems with HSI, but on the whole is better than what I have been getting with Charter for some time now. Mediacomm has HDTV and DVR.
CenturyTel has DSL which gets great recommendations from co-workers and friends.
I am very close in making a move, CenturyTel for DSL and MediaComm for T.V. I just don't know when I will be able to schedule time to get that done but I am looking at my work schedule and trying very hard to find it. Each night of trying to frag with 300 ms pings makes it easier to schedule a change.

Drew502 posted : I can tell you from knowing. Every time you call tech support. No ifs ands or buts, you will be put through that routine.

No, it's not because we enjoy it. It's because we have to be able to report that information to our liaison that reports to the NOC. We cannot do this directly (at least in the call center I work in). The people that act as liaisons by their policies are forced to make sure we have followed these steps (first call or the thousandth). Then assuming the problem cannot be caused by anything other than areawide issues (simply saying everyone I know is having the same problem is not a qualifier). Then and only then providing the netstat is perfect (which is why all testing should be done in safemode with networking), and that the QCR file shows noticable problems that are network based, or even if they show everything 100% normal (Personally I always have better luck forwarding an issue if there's nothing on that report that would indicate a problem short of slow speeds just happening, or a traceroute that shows a charter based IP extremely latent) can we then escalate it any further through a ticket submitted to the liaison team who in turn stores these for trending till a certain number of these reports are made on a given night at which point they then contact the NOC to report it.

It's long, drawn out and repetitive, but it's the only thing a phone rep can do. Screaming at them, cussing at them, demanding a supervisor, none of these things are going to get the issue corrected any faster. The techs hate to get a slow speeds call as much as you guys hate calling them in, but in the end they are doing the job that they are being paid to do and following the route they have to follow to get anything with any validity looked at.

Also if you scream for a supervisor, or demand to speak to the corporate escalations team this is exactly what happens.

1. You'll get some instant gratification by getting your ego stroked.
2. You'll be told "We'll get someone right on that."
3. That person will email a supervisor at your corresponding call center.
4. That supervisor will delegate responsibility as to who is going to call you back among the techs.
5. That tech will attempt to contact you through times and availability given through the escalation point.
6. That tech will follow the same path of troubleshooting that the first tech did, or was trying to follow so he/she can escalate it to the liaison team who then may or may not escalate it to the NOC providing enough people on a given night report the same issue.
