pulling locals with HD tuner

I bought an over the air tuner, and i was wondering if i plug it into the wall and pull the locals off of mediacom (i currently have family cable)? Anyone know if that is possible? Or do the encrypt them so only there receivers can? I know with adelphia you can pull the locals with an over the air tuner plugged into there system.

The tuner must be capable of tuning QAM-modulated signals, which is the system Mediacom uses (and most other cable cos). If Mediacom encrypts the local HD signals, then your tuner has to be CableCard compatible to unlock the channels.

A number of cable operators don't encrypt the local channels, so you should give it a try.
