tlhIngan posted : And CableCard equipped PC capture cards must have secure paths and support all the crappy features that make recording HDTV really difficult. If it can't establish a secure path, it has to degrade image quality.

(Say hello to your new secure monitor...).

Ditto on regular cable boxes and stuff as well - at least right now HDTV isn't degraded yet.

If you have an MCE PC, there is a hack out there that'll let you get HDTV output from the Motorola HDTV boxes (6400? 6412? I can't remember the models) via the firewire port and record programming via the firewire input on the MCE. You will need to use the IR blaster, and hook the TV tuner up to use it. The IR blaster is to control the HDTV box, and the TV tuner is to satisfy MCE.

Don't know if it works on Shaw boxes, but it's worth a try.

anon posted : In theory a CableCard-equipped TV will decode encrypted QAM, if you could get a CableCard from Shaw. But it wouldn't help because the TVs have an undocumented "feature" that disables any high-quality output connections when they are displaying encrypted content.

blackkitty posted : I was looking for a TV Tuner card myself. Gotta do more research. An HDTV card would be nice. Have you tried this with Bell HD or Starchoice HD yet?

Just curious...

Quince posted : I have a DVICO FusionHDTV5 Gold Plus card, which will handle unencrypted QAM, but all Shaw HDTV channels appear to be encrypted. Do any of the Shaw consoles have coaxial outputs (that connect to a tuner input), instead of just component outputs? That should allow me to connect to the PC card and view HDTV content without owning an HDTV set.

BTW, does there exist any standalone QAM decryption equipment? The Shaw boxes are pricey.
