Download Speeds abysmal

I'm on PRO -- tried DL'ing a file this morning only to see the speed at a crawl. Nothing out of the ordinary on the stats of the 5100B modem. Tested with SBC Speed Test shows UL speed of 428K but DL at a miserable 15.9K!

9A019090388231-emhrilpg40w is what is listed for the PPP access concentrator. 69.211.59 are the 1st 3 sequences of the IP address. I even rebooted the modem to grab another IP and the speed is what is above (previous test the DL was about 5K).

beachboy0 or RazznCain , can you guys help? Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Yes, my speeds are horrible today. Furthermore, for the past couple of weeks I've been getting disconnected 3-4 times a day on average...moreso in the evening.

We're experiencing problems in Crete, IL on a company SBC DSL line, but I have no problems yet on my Dyer, IN home line.

I'm assuming with than many having issues that I shouldn't add to the noise in SBC Direct--or is that an incorrect assumption?

With this wide spread of a issue...I would say lets keep this mornings issue in this thread.

Just post tracerts or ping plotter results for the techs. I have alerted a few of them and once they come on I am sure they will be made aware of it.

I can't stress this enough, I know it's a pain but if you can call into SBC support and get some tickets open. The more tickets they get the faster it will be looked at.

No you can post in SBC Direct also. It just might be easier to post all info here but then again I am remember the old days .

If you want to post in sbc direct go ahead. Everyone try to use the same title like "slow speeds 11-22-05 AM" as a title.

Pingplot from T1 to Crete DSL line

Picture is a PingPlot from our T1 to our DSL line.

I can't do a traceroute right now, because firewalls are configured so that traceroutes go out the T1 not the DSL. I'll need to reconfigure some things to be able to do that.

The DSL line is set up not to respond to traceroutes, but I get great times up until then:

35% packet loss from my home line to my office line (both inside the Chicago POP, no less) and miserable throughput. Those two tests were just run within minutes of each other on a 6016/608 line in full-on sync.

Somethin's up. And it's big. I don't think the current Sober worm attack could be entirely responsible, but I could be wrong.

Terrible speeds in Gibraltar Michigan at the moment, so bad got booted from online game, yahoo im boot right off, but MSN, and AIM, and other stuff stayed on. (48173 Zip Code), Gibraltar/Rockwood Michigan again.

Seems to just returned to normal I think

Yes, I'm back in business.

I have a feeling this won't address my disconnect/sync loss issue, though. I'll await a reply in the SBC Direct forum on that issue.

I've got the 1.5 meg express package, where I normally get 1.2 ~ 1.3 meg on speed tests but the last few days things have slowed to a near crawl. I did a couple speed tests a few minutes ago and got 500~600K edit: did a few more and now things are worse: 200~300K downstream.

should I call SBC tech support, or just hang tight?

edit: I did call TS - got a ticket # and case #

I have no idea what the problem is but I realize alot of people in the chicago suburbs are experiencing slow speeds...

update: an SBC tech called. said that I had horrible downstream speed / signal. one of his techs should be over on Monday. he said to tell the tech to uncap my line.

and also that I am close enough to the CO to get 3.0 meg

so that's potentially good news.

Now having problems at home

Ping Plot with high first hop response time

Ok, this is probably karma payback for saying yesterday that I had no problems at home. I'm on 6016/608 static plan in NW Indiana on an RT served out of the Schererville, CO.

I'm getting high ping times to my first hop. Earlier in the evening I was getting some packet loss. I'm not seeing that now, but response time is lagging.

Recent speedtests with reference numbers are showing anywhere from normal speed to some slowdown on download:

#1037372

Download = 4.339 Mbps
Upload = 495.17 kbps

#1037373

Download = 3.727 Mbps
Upload = 490.37 kbps

#1037378

Download = 3.670 Mbps
Upload = 500.06 kbps

My status page on the BBR monitor is showing some increased ping times:

»ny-monitor.dslreports.co ··· %3Am%3Ay

PingPlotter is showing the higher than normal ping times, but no packet loss now. (Earlier in the evening, I was experiencing packet loss and much slower speed tests, with the lowest being around 600k down.)

Smokeping plot from the company I work for via an SBC T-1 also shows the problems--including some slight packet loss.

Re: Download Speeds abysmal

Dunno about speed. I just got home now and it seems ok. Since my disconnect problems started, I've been running pingplotter to watch my connection. Between 3:04pm and 4:50pm I had 39 disconnects. So, that's almost two hours down now. The thing is, I don't know if it's related to all of this or not. I've spoken to at least one other person in the group that's indicated that they're having the same problems as me at the same times. I posted to SBC Direct a few days ago and nobody got back to me about it.
