Thank you Belmedic, Martindziad, and StillLearn,
Ended up getting an Acer with built-in 802.11b/g and the Netgear WGT624 (Super G) at Staples very early this morning. They were selling the WGT624 bundled with a WG511T PC Card for the same price (after rebates) as just the WGR614.
The Netgear set-up wizard ran into a problem when it tried to determine the WAN settings. It recognized I had PPPOE but could not deal with the 5100b doing the authentication. It insisted on me supplying the username and password. I ended up doing a full manual configuration in about 20 minutes. It took another 5 minutes to get the notebook's wireless port configured for a secured connection to the WGT624. In the process, I found out that one of the neighbors had a wide open wireless connection to their Comcast broadband service.
Belmedic, I took your recommendation about changing the LAN IP addresses one step further. I did not feel like dealing with new firewall settings on our computers and set the LAN address and DHCP of the WGT624 to match those used by the BEFSR41 (172.16.0.xxx). Worked like a charm.
The next project may be to find a USB to 802.11g adapter for the Tivo box in the bedroom. |
