rcilink posted : I would imagine the "purchasing" of an ONT from a source, like the one posted here from eBay, would be not worth it..

Similar to buying a used cable box from eBay, most all of them (not every single one, but 98% of them) are lost/stolen items, not properly returned to the cable companies..

This means, if you purchase a box from eBay, your cable company will most likely _not_ have anything to do with activating the box... as they will see its source (the serial numbers do wonders!)

Now, there is the exception (the 2% of legit boxes/equipment for sale on eBay). For this equipment to be useful for its intended application, your FIOS (verizon) company would have to add the serial number to their database and provision the equipment. Since they are liable to provide "lifeline" service, and to ensure quality of service, I dont think you will ever have luck getting them to activate the ONT.

On a similar thread, I have had success getting a "customer owned" cable box registered on Comcast. (The DCP-501 is/was available from Amazon.com). It took me over one week to get the Comcast people to get it activated. They ran the serial numbers to verify it was not stolen equipment, and then had to add it to their database. After that, it got a 'hit' and now does VOD, and all the other digital cable stuff. Again, this is in the 2% of boxes that are the legit ones..

Summary: dont waste your time with this ONT. I did look at the seller's other auctions, and would suspect that he has legitimately obtained the ONT, but only a serial number check will prove that. I feel that Verizon security will have no influence on the sale of that ONT, if the serial number is not one of their numbers.

If anything, Verizon security can add the serial number to a blacklist/alarm list. Then, when they see it hooked-up, they can chase you down and get you for 'tampering' with the fiber or something.. (just a guess).
