[Slow Speed] Different Speeds east coast and west coast

Click for full size
1: I play World of Warcraft using adelphia cable modem.. the server I play on is a mountain time zone server for a year now. The last 2 months the pings have been horrible between roughly 5:00pm and 10:00pm pretty much everyday including weekends. Late at night or early in the morning all is well... however during these peak times I have been suffering. Here are some speed tests from east coast and west coast

2006-01-05 20:20:41 Speed test @ dslreports-west1.speakeas 168/390 kbps
del 2006-01-05 20:19:41 Speed test @ ec 2546/431 kbps
del 2006-01-05 17:59:29 Speed test @ dslr-west1.megapath.net 233/390 kbps
del 2006-01-05 17:58:35 Speed test @ ec 3994/430 kbps
del 2006-01-04 20:48:54 Speed test @ ec 3616/427 kbps

2. Started roughly 2 months ago in november
3. Between 5 - 10pm.. but that is when i am home from work so not sure about rest of day
4. cleveland, ohio 44131
5. surfboard not sure which model exactly don't have access to it at the moment
6. netgear wireless router wgt624 i am using wireless now but i can go hardwire if necessary and maybe directly into modem if i ask nicely
7. Zonealarm and AVG free
8. 00:12:25:DA:A1:AE

The question is should I call adelphia about it or is there something wrong with my setup.

here's a traceroute also:

Could you post some results from some of the Adelphia speed test servers. »speedtest.adelphia.net/c ··· eedtest/ .Also bottom of trace is chopped.

Well you mentioned those times and my first guess was load issue. (ie lots of people using the service). Not saying this is the cause and what not, but that was my first guess and could be a good indicator. The times mentioned by you is really the "peak" times as well for people to be using there home internet connection. If that turns out to be the root cause, well, not to much can be done as that is the nature of cable broadband. Lets wait and see what the techs think.

sorry about the trace being cropped... thought I had it all but everything is normal at bottom. That #7 hop seems to be causing issues as I've ran a few traceroutes and the loss has been as high as 40% with some packet loss it tells me always at the same hop.

Your downstream power level is on the edge of the low side »Cable Modems and Wiring Issues »What kind of signal levels do I want on my cable modem? .You should if possible connect the modem to one outlet of first splitter and all TVs on other outlet of splitter.

I'll take a look at the splitters when I get home from work tonight and post what I find.

Any other suggestions would be welcome though

I dont think his modem is the problem here, his speeds + pings are fine. It sounds more like a routing issue, or server load on the other end. Have you tried different servers?

And, Ripper, I dont know why you said his download speeds are slow, thats right on target for regular HSI.

The only test I see that has ok speed is the Albany test 3622.648 Kbps, the other tests Miami 2394.552 Kbps and LA#2 1394.608 Kbps, don't look good to me.Not the kind speeds I'm used to with my 4000/384 plan, check my speed tests in my second post.

You can't expect to get a good throughput going 3000 miles. That's navigating through a lot of traffic and bottlenecks.

Re: [Slow Speed] Different Speeds east coast and w

well well its nice to see everyone is happy with their speeds...heh

I didn't get a chance to trace the splitters yet its gonna be a job for tomorrow

The server I play on now I average 600 - 900ms pings as a mountain zone server... I'll check the pings on an east coast server

And I understand that west coast speeds are going to be slower obviously than east coast speeds but it seems like a major drop to me

Thanks for all the info though keep em coming

The signal levels look much better that way.I would leave it that way if you can.Your speeds increased on all the tests, the slower speeds at LA must have to do with your routing or number of hops.

Back in the OP I mentioned I play World of Warcraft on a mountain time server which is close to West coast.. since I have been having some major high latency (600 - 900pings most nights) it has become unplayable lately after a good 10 months of steady pings of 200ms or less.

Just trying to figure out what has changed... maybe it's time for a provider change to fix it.

I see you have visual route, can you run one for www.yahoo.com and www.dslreports.com and post.My neo trace results above.
Also can you post the IP address of the game server so I can run a trace to it.

here are a few more to different servers
is this a at&t issue?

I'm also going to try and wire directly to modem without using router to see if it makes a difference
