[Brighthouse] problems in central florida?Hi,
I'm in Poinciana, FL and I've been having some problems in the evening these past couple of weeks. Between 6-9 pm, my connection randomly drops, my pings become really huge, and my download speeds are sub 1mbps at times.
In the morning, it is usually perfect, I'm getting a good 4.8 mbps, and pings are good.
I called Bright House, they sent a tech, he said the line is clean and he swapped my modem. That didn't fix anything of course.
Anybody else experiencing problems in Central Florida? |

Are any lights out in the area? Look for RF interference that may be happening during those hours like auto lights. |

We have street lights that come on automatically, but I don't think that's the problem. They're all working properly, and they've never caused a problem before.
I talked to Earthlink, they said "call bright house" I called bright house, they said "email earthlink and send them trace routes".
I'm tempted to switch to RR to see if that fixes aything. |

Switching won't help as the only things that would change are the the amount your being charged for the service and what servers (DNS, Usenet, SMTP, etc) your using. Changing servers will not help as there is a problem in the connection. What type of modem do you have? Can you access it by going to » 192.168.100.1? You will should have your LAN cable plugged directly into the modem to try this (not plugged into a router). Run a tracert when the connection is poor and good and post the results (use the same address of course) (I'm recommend x-posting both the results and your initial question in the Cable users Forum) |

Yes, I can access 192.168.100.1, but most pages say "this feature is not enabled" My modem is a Scientific Atlanta WebSTAR DPC2100
this is what it looks like when the connection is bad: C:\>tracert yahoo.com Unable to resolve target system name yahoo.com.
or, when it's just slow:
C:\>tracert yahoo.com

When everything is working well, it looks like this: C:\>tracert yahoo.com

I'd furnish both of those tracert's to Brighthouse. To me,it appears that the slow down is between your modem and the local RR station. Problem area:
2 * 1888 ms 348 ms 10.122.80.1
3 47 ms 41 ms 26 ms 81.231.95.24.cfl.res.rr.com [24.95.231.81]
4 44 ms 67 ms 31 ms 153.228.95.24.cfl.res.rr.com [24.95.228.153]
Those RR locations are their DNS servers.
** Also, 10.122.80.1 is a blackhole server. I'm not that up-to-speed on this but it seems like this might be the problem as well. It seems like in your "slow" posting it's holding your data request for quite some time.
Post your results in the Cable forum and I'm betting you get some good information. |

Thanks, I've posted in the cable users forum.
About their DNS servers, am I actually using Road Runner's DNS? I thought earthlink provided the DNS servers. |

Brighthouse sucks! Period.I raise my hand and join the list. I have the digital phone and ISP. Every night, sometime after sunset, say goodbye to the phone and Internet. Yes they did the swap the modem trick (3 times)check the line in person (10+ times) and show up and not have a clue several times. They even ran a new dedicated line from the pole connection, added a new D-Mark, and put in brand new cable right up to the modem. RESULTS=
1.Every night, within one hour of sunset...bye-bye ISP and Digital phone.
2.About two hours after sun rise (sometimes longer) ta-da.. on comes the service.
Condensation, loose connections, only the shadow knows, not Brighthouse techs.
WE REALLY NEED TO START A BRIGHTHOUSE SUCKS SITE and send the data to the F.C.C. |

If they did not do anything, I'd think the complaint would be valid but it seems like they did everything they could to correct any problem that would exist in their own equiptment. Ever consider the problem was from an outside source? |

I don't think it's "light related". I just see problems for a while, and then, after 10-11pm it's usually problem free. I personally don't think Bright House sucks. I mean, I can't really expect this kind of problem to be fixed with one phone call. The first tech they sent didn't do much other than change the modem, but I can't expect him to stick around all day long to see whether my connection is gonna start acting up. I emailed the traceroutes above to bright house and they are sending a tech on tuesday for a "coaxial cable service call". We'll see what that does if anything. I've hopped a couple of networks ran by my neighbors (don't tell anyone ) to see if they were experiencing the same problems, and they are. (one neighbor on RR, one on EL) Also, I've noticed that RR.com's status page indicates problem in cfl since feb 13. Could that be it? EL's status page doesn't mention anything. |

I think the problem might be in what you said, that you asked your neighbors if they were having problems also during that time. From what I know, cable broadband to your home is shared with others on a grid so at night when everybody is home, it's heavily in use causing slow downs. |

I doubt it. You know, this is not a heavily populated area at all. Just single family homes. Not a lot of people have HSI through bright house in my neighborhood.
It's pretty weird really, I'm using VOIP, and when problems start, I can still hear the other party fine, but they can't hear me anymore. Kinda like if I was uploading some big file at the same time.
Also, this started happening all of a sudden, it went from absolutely problem free to having issues every single day.
---------
A quick update on my situation:
When I first posted, the problems would start in the evening. Lately, it's more like 2-3pm to 2 am.
I'm in contact with a network tech who ran a diagnosis test on my line for 24 hours, he called me back and said there was no problems, when in fact, I had had huge issues during the time he was monitoring my line.
I mentioned to him that my problems seem to be between my modem and the device with the 10.122.80.1 IP address. He said that that device was not on my route. I gave him my ip address to make sure he was monitoring the right IP, he told me that 24.233.*.* was not my ip address, that it probably was my router's IP. How can he not know that it's their IP?
When I explained that router's IPs usually start with 192, and I proved to him that the 24.233.*.* IP was my actual IP (by sending him a traceroute), he agreed to monitor it for a while. I am still waiting to hear from him. |

I wonder if your router might be having trouble, maybe you could check into a firmware update. It's worth a shot. |

I actually tried to connect without the router. Same issues. I also tried replacing the coax cable that plugs into my modem, and that didn't fix anything.
It looks like the problem is somewhere between my modem and the 10.122.80.1 device, whatever that device is. |

Hmm, 10.something, which would be inside your network. I'd probably turn one device off then ping, turn off and ping, who knows what it could be? I wish you luck. |

10.* is inside their network actually. It's the first hopafter my cable modem. Maybe a node? Thanks for wishing me luck, looks like I might need it |

My modem power level was on 8 and BH cut it back to 4, no more problem. Motorola 5100 is the modem i use. hope this helps......... |

My problem is apparently fixed. I got a call saying that they did some work on the main line (not sure what they mean by that) and that everything should be working ok. So far so good, but I'll keep an eye on my connection. Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply to help me out |
