Hong Kong boardband rocks!!I'm now using ATM bridge in Hong Kong, maximum speed 25Mb, I used iTV (Interactive TV) from PCCW-HKT(Pacific Century Cyberworks- Hong Kong Telecom) also. We automatically upgraded to a 3Mb down/ 640Kbps up service, which cost less than US$40 a month, unlimited access. ADSL and ATM is used to provide service, there're more than 10 ISPs providing ATM/ADSL service. And PCCW-HKT is coming up with 6Mb and 10Mb services also Another one is i-CABLE, only cable company in Hong Kong, their 256Kbps plan is only $12 for unlimited access!!! 10Mb down plan is only $30!!! with modem rental. Modem is NOT DOCSIS standard, it's S-CDMA technology, and they're coming out with 38Mb service soon!!! Yet another one is HGC ( Hutchison Global Crossing) they offer 10Mb down/ 10Mb up services through their Gigabit Ethernet Network!!!! And also using phone line depolying VDSL services! Which is 6Mb down/ 640 down!!! they offer unlimited access for $30 !!!!! Some of the minors are using LMDS wireless technology, which provides 1.5Mb to 3Mb down/ 1Mb up services, not avaliable at most of the area in Hong Kong.
The PCCW-HKT covers 99% of Hong Kong using 1.5Mb 95% using 3Mb i-CABLE covers 65-70% of Hong Kong HGC covers 5% of Hong Kong using 10Mb and 7% using VDSL Other LMDS providers covers roughly 3-4% of Hong Kong population.

gkong, welcome to DSLR! I'm glad you found us. I believe when you say boardband, you mean broadband - please correct me if I'm wrong. Could you provide a little more detail about the plan that you have? You mention in the first sentence a maximum of 25Mb, but then you say you have 3Mb down/640Kbps up. I hope you become a regular around here - the more, the merrier! | actions · 2001-Oct-6 10:55 pm · (locked) | gkong join:2001-10-06 Oklahoma City, OK |

I'm sorry for the confusion, the ATM 25 network is a FTTB network (Fibre Optic to the Building) then through a switch to ATM 25 inside the building. Most of the residental building in Hong Kong has at least 35 floors, each floor consist of ten or more households. Each of them have individual ATM 25Mb connection. Then because not everyone has ATM connection to their house, they use ADSL instead, so they limit the Internet downstream speed to 1.5Mb at first, then now 3Mb, maybe 6Mb in the future (max speed of ADSL). iTV or now PCTV (Pacific Century TV) is the first commercial Interactive TV in the world, it utilize 25Mb fully to transmit video signal using MPEG-2 codec, and a Java interface at first, now is DHTML 4.0.

Thanks for the clarification. It seems like they've got a good setup going in Hong Kong. How long has the service been available? Have you had to deal with any major outages or fluctuation in service? In your building, do you know how many people are actively using the service? | actions · 2001-Oct-8 10:43 am · (locked) | gkong join:2001-10-06 Oklahoma City, OK |

The boardband was started by HKT first, introduce iTV at 1997, several month later, they called "Super Netvigator" started service, 1.5Mb down/ 64Kb up, using a SmartBox connect to TV and computer, using NEC technologies and Epson PCMAIA card as a Ethernet interface. At that time, when I upload huge files, I need to RESET the smartbox everytime! But iTV didn't do much in upload, just select and watch movie. Many outages, even now! Major problem is bandwidth to US is not enough, cables being cut in Pacific Ocean, etc....... I'm now in California, but 1 month ago, back in Hong Kong, I'm using Arescom NetATM 800 and HKNet service (Nippon Telegram and Telephone owned) service, great. Now they're using G.Lite self installation kit, before that, they need technians to install..... In the whole building, mmmmmm, maybe 100-200 users. Our phone network is all fibre-optic since 1992, first in the world. Even we have 11 cell phone carriers in Hong Kong, if you want to know more, let me know, we have all standards, CDMA, TDMA, GSM/DCS/PCS....... in a city have only half of the size of Rode Island!! With 7million people!!!!! | actions · 2001-Oct-8 10:41 pm · (locked) | |

Yeah no kidding! I am not so sure about that ATM stuff but I will say this much: HKNet.com, my DSL provider, just started offering a 6 megabit down 640 K upload connection for about US $65. For about another US $20 a month you can get 4 static IP address's. Just unbelievable but all true. I have the 3 megabit line with a 512k upload from HKnet and I live in Discovery Bay, a village of mostly low rise town-houses on a outlying island by the airport. The tests I have done on this web site tell me that I can get about a 540K upload speed to the US west coast and and about 2.5m download speed, depending on how tweaked I am.
