Re: Muslim in the spell-checker pleaseIt is in the spell checker. I typed "muslim" to test it, and it corrected it to "Muslim" |

Actually, I'd be willing to bet that it is. I believe the spell-check was a prefab, and stuff gets added to it as requests are made. Burqa/burka haven't been a mainstream part of the English/American vocabulary until pretty recently. Lots of stuff isn't in the database -- the last request I made was to add Firefox, which the site advertises, but came up wrong for the longest time. I honestly wouldn't read any sinister motives into either. Oh, and you might want to hey mod your opening post and flag down a nice mod to request that they change the title of your thread -- your request may be being overlooked since the word "Muslim" is already in the spell-check. |

I have never heard the word "burka" before. Seems to me that with all the English words that are frequently used, and not in the dictionary, that we should concentrate on those first. "Esoteric" words can be added after all the common words (particularly those relating to computers and computer technology that are used frequently at this site) which are currently missed are added.
Spellbound says "burka" should be spelled as "bursa". |

Seraphim isn't in the spell checker either. Maybe someone should go through every holy book and enter every single word found in each one so as not to offend someone. |

The word burqa or burka is older then America. It should be in there just like some words from the country your family came from. |

Give me a break. It has nothing to do with religion. It's religion that has caused this rift in the first place. I don't give a crap about all that. I'm not Muslim but the words are used in North American newspapers and the Muslim community has been referred to in many threads. The words should be there unless it is being censored like American scientists about the melting ice of Greenland. |

Cucamonga isn't in the spell checker either and it doesn't have anything to do with religion...It does need to be updated. |

No proper nouns should be included in a spell check dictionary. No foreign words or phrases. No acronyms that are specific to an industry or society belong there either. Just because the spell-checker doesn't recognize a word doesn't mean it's incorrectly spelled. The purpose of a spell-checker is to deal with common words that are often misspelled... not to deal with every special case anyone can find. To meet everyone's desires, the spell-checker would have to be larger than Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, and I seriously doubt that many of us can even lift that thing.
If you use a special or uncommon word, you should know how it's spelled.
And I can't think of too many English words that are not in the dictionary... with the exception of those specialized "words" to an industry, or "shop talk". Just because a "word" is used does not make it an English word. That said, there are a whole lot of "English" words that have foreign roots/origins... words that English-speaking nations have adopted because there was no appropriate translation to the original.
Asking that every "word" you have ever had the spell-checker highlight is just plain foolhardy and totally unnecessary. |
