You run from Buena Park to Downtown L.A. on ASI's ATM network. You are handed over to PBI in LA03 and handed off to sprintlink net. Sprintlink.net takes you up to Stockton, then somewhere, then hands you over to atlas in sjc -- San Jose California. Atlas hauls you back to LA, looks like the airport area, and then to Buenapark.

hop 5 is Downtown Los Angeles; not San Francisco
hop 12 is probably San Jose, CA; not Atlanta GA.
NeoTrace is not the most accurate of tools.

DNS server lag isn't going to affect ping times or download speeds. DNS lag will cause long pauses when going to a different or new site, maybe even time out and report a DNS error, but once the IP address is found, DNS is out of the picture.

Because it appears that PBI or Sprintlink don't peer locally with www.buenapark.com's upstream provider, icix.net (apparently a susidiary of Intermedia-Digex aka digex.net), your request goes from Sprintlink Anaheim to MAE-West in San Jose where your request is handed off to digex.net at hop 12 (which is in San Jose; not in Atlanta, GA :)) apparently because this is the closest exchange point where both Sprintlink and digex.net have a presence and a peering agreement. digex.net then hands off to icix.net at hop 13 for the rest of the journey.

If you look at the device name of hop 2, the lsan03 indicates to me that it's located in Los Angeles (Paladin can probably give you the street address :)).
My trace to unknown hop 3, 216.102.181.18, reports a nodename of dist4-vlan60.lsan03.pbi.net ... looks like this one is a PBI device in Los Angeles too.
Although Neotrace reports hop 4 and 5 are in San Francisco, once again look at the lsan03 in the device names - I'd bet Neotrace and you, dollars to donuts, they are both PBI edge routers in Los Angeles.

IMO, you're placing too much confidence in Neotrace locations :).

If you're in Buena Park, it is highly doubtful (I avoid saying never or can't be) your PBI gateway is in San Francisco.

My DNS are, and my Cayman switches between:

19:03:39:18 L3 DNS: switching nameservers, 206.13.29.12 is now the primary
19:03:40:19 L3 DNS: switching nameservers, 64.160.192.70 is now the primary

This happens about 20 times a day. I do not notice any DNS problems.

Just to make sure that we're talking about the same thing when you refer to DNS servers and their locations, let's use the other thread where the IP you mentioned appears to be a gateway, not a DNS server.

How are you determining that when you type in a domain name, the request to get the IP address associated with that domain name goes to SF, to LA DNS, back to SF and then to your machine before going to the IP address? Does Neotrace Pro show the route a DNS request travels?

At any rate, my trace to the LA DNS goes from my gateway to LSAN03 then to the name server; going to SF does travel 8 hops, several over Sprintlink, but there's a whopping big 5ms difference in ping times between the two (9ms to LA; 14ms to SF). I saw a demo once where a light was flashed for 10 ms and then again for 20ms; no one in the room could tell which flash lasted longer - I doubt a 5ms difference is going to be that objectionable :). For all we know, DNS requests might even be faster going to SF since the SF machine or one of the others might have a lighter load then the one in LA.

IOW, great distance or circuitous routing isn't always bad - our company has a lightly loaded server 8 hops away in Dallas, TX on a T3 that responds quicker then a more heavily loaded server 4 hops away in Long Beach, CA running on a T1 (I'm in Los Angeles).

if i stop/disable the DHCP service in administrative tools the PPPoE connection just becomes inactive while still connected. as soon as i restart the service, everything is fine.

When you say you couldn't connect, do you mean connect to any site if you used a domain name or do you mean your modem couldn't establish a connection at all? The first could be a DNS problem which bmorrisj82 is suspecting while the other is much more basic .
