Chilliwack, 500Kbps or Less, Upgrade Modem?

Phoned Shaw to complain. Went through all the regular bull.
End all he told me to goto the office and trade in my modem for the new ones. He said they are on different routers and will be a lot better for speed.

Use my connection for 90% online gamming, and regular net surfing.

Should I Yes/No?

for gaming, of course.

if you use bit torrent, you will be capped on the new modem soon (if not already), but for anything else Docsis (the new motorola modems Shaw hands out) you can't go wrong.

I too have noticed horrible speeds during the evening which is causing very high ping times when gaming.

PGH: Please post again once you've traded in your cable modem to let us know how it goes. If all is well, I will probably do the same.

Got a Motorola Model SB5101 today.

slowest test so far 3900/430
Fastest test so far 4900/490
Thats testing at 5:30pm too.

Considering I have not got a test better than 1mb in the last couple of weeks its quite the upgrade for nothing.

Forgot to add.

Using Modem > WRT54G Router > Comp (Hardwired, not wireless).
Have not tried the Modem (USB) > Comp (USB) direct connect yet.

don't bother.. using the USB puts a load on your CPU, and should only be used in troubleshooting situations afaik.

sounds fantastic... did you just take the old terayon with power cord to their office to get the exchange?

yes just take it to the office and providing they have docsis service in chilliwack they will swap it for yeah. they are slowing trying to get everyone off the terayon modems. i know they have a docsis router serving Abbotsford so that one most likely serves chilliwack as well

As far as I know, the Chilliwack and Abbotsford systems are not related. Shaw bought out Cogeco in Chilliwack, rewired the whole town for Cable internet, and its wasnt for a year or so later that they bought out Rogers in Abbotsford.

But anyway, as stated just take it to the office 9-5 Mon-Fri.

That's the process... you need to get tech support to OK the modem swap, otherwise they won't do it, unless you spend the extra $10/month for "Extreme" speeds.

I was in to the office today to inquire about a modem swap and they told me I needed to upgrade to "Extreme" or complain to tech support to get it approved... if the woman at the counter fed me a line I'm going to raise sh*t...

'EDIT'
OTOH, I just ran 2 speed tests to Speakeasy Seattle ~20 minutes apart and got 5194/457 kbps and 5130/451 kbps on the Terayon. I'll see what it looks like after 6 P.M..

Any updates on how the speeds have been since the modem swap? I still haven't gotten around to doing the trade in yet.

the reason main they want you to deal with support is because if your modem levels are not ideal with your terayon, you may not be able to get online with the docsis at all, as the frequency range it operates on, while similar, is slightly different, and more finicky.

I just went and got the new modem

Every speed test that I have done has given me results of between

4000Kbps-5000kbps

with my old modem my speeds would usually be less 1000Kbps during this time of day

I also live in Chilliwack, had horrible speeds during the day as bad as 800mbps and as high as 3000mbps(on speakeasy seattle)and then i complained and then a few days later they sent me an e-mail saying they woulld do network upgrades. Thats what they did and now i get way better speeds, usually no lower than 3000mbps during peak-hours and up to 5800mbps on like early sunday mornings. Never had to replace my modem or anything.

chilliwackian : I have been there done that a few times in the last five years. Most times it takes multiple phone calls and harrasment just to get them to tell you an upgraded is schedualed, and sometimes months waiting for the upgrade.

The modem switch was a one day deal. Thinking of it, I had that same old terayon modem for over five years...
