Quite often the device is trying to hog up multiple channels which in an urban area makes things difficult for everyone. Beyond that, I don't see in this thread where the signal strength is mentioned? Are you right next to it at 100% signal or halfway across the house at 30% signal? Couple of other things, useful to test speed from WiFi to a host on LAN then you know how fast the WiFi really is, not just the random variable of WAN connection from one minute to the next. Keep things simple and controlled, get it tweaked and then expand outward.

I've never checked the IP settings for that connection. I don't believe that my laptop is doing any kind of authentication. The only thing that I recall setting up was the WPA-PSK on the wireless card. However, I just looked at the programs on my laptop via control panel and there is a program called Verizon FIOS activation (even though I activated my account using my desktop PC). I suppose I could delete that program and see if that helps. This is really just a minor annoyance since everything is fine after about 3 minutes.
Rich16 posted : I've been getting fairly consistent speeds of 11.2/1.85 on my wireless using that speed test. Perhaps changing to channel 11 and disabling Super G and Turbo mode has made a difference. I am using a Model 611 ONT but will consider having a tech bring out a 610 for testing purposes if the issues continue. The only other odd behavior that I continue to see is that when I first turn on my laptop, I immediately get connected into my network. I can get on the internet and browse for a minute or so and then the connection drops for a few seconds before reconnecting. It then takes a couple of minutes after that reconnect before I am able to access the internet again. After that, it is fine. Could that have anything to do with DHCP leases? I have mine set up to expire after a week. Do I have to use DHCP? I have 3 devices connected to my home network. I'm also using WPA-PSK but I doubt that is the issue. Perhaps the logs on my router will help as well. Thank you all for the assistance. I'll post again if I see additional issues.

Rich16 posted : Well, I turned off Turbo mode and changed to channel 11 and everything worked well last night. Speeds were consistently around 13.5/1.8 on my wireless. I also changed the 11g transmit rate on my NIC to 54 mbps. I disabled turbo mode but kept Super G on. I'm not sure if it matters or not if I enable or disable Super G. I may try disabling it this weekend to see if that makes any difference. Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll monitor the speeds for a while and post again if the issues come back.

Rich16 posted : I'm sure you're correct about Super Turbo mode. I'll disable that mode tonight and that will allow me to change the channel to 11 on the router. Hopefully it will change automatically on my wireless NIC because that is not one of the properties that shows up on the advanced tab. I changed the 11g transmit rate to 54 mbps last night (from 12 mbps) but that disabled my wireless connection so I changed it back to 12. Perhaps if I change that in conjunction with disabling super turbo and changing the channel it will work. I'm interested to see if anyone responds to vz tech 2's comments above. There must be some explanation of these performance issues.

[northeast] Inconsistent Wireless Speeds

Rich16 posted : I've had FIOS since December and recently upgraded to the 15/2 package. I'm consistently getting those speeds using my desktop that is directly hooked up to my router. However, my wireless PC is very inconsistent. One day I will get speeds around 12/1.8 and the next day I may get speeds under 1.0 (both upload and download). I'm using a non-Verizon DI-624 router with 2.70 firmware. I have an IBM T41 Thinkpad with an internal Arcadyn 11a/b/g Wireless Lan Mini PCI Adapter. My laptop is about 20 feet from the router and the connection is always in the "excellent" range. I have it secured with WPA, Mac filtering, etc. so there is no other traffic within the network impacting my speeds. I could set my router to "G" mode only if that would make a difference. But, my overall question is why are my speeds so inconsistent when my router and laptop settings are not changing? Do I need to change any settings on my wireless card in my laptop? I'm pretty sure I have the router set up correctly ... I've been using it for over 2 years. Am I being maxed out at 12 mbps because of a setting in my wireless card? Is the DI-624 the culprit? Any help would be appreciated.
