Connection pauses for a few seconds.

Ugh! And yet another problem with charter, every like 20minutes or so(not really counting time) my internet connection pauses for a few seconds, then mysteriousely comes back! This is horrible! I can't play games because i'd get dropped from the servers!

Try specifying your areas DNS servers in the Network Configuration. If the same happens, get the DNS server information for a different area and put that in their and see if it does the same thing.

DNS? Isn't that only used when resolving domain names to IP addresses? Once that's resolved, and a connection is established with the remote IP of the game server, you wouldn't resolve anything again until you tried to connect to a different domain name or machine on that domain.

Also, the DNS entry is filled in by the DHCP when the NIC is initialized. After that, it has DNS entries entered and won't try to get new ones until the next initialization or release/renew operation. There is no periodic delay in throughput from using DHCP to assign your DNS entries.

This looks more to me like his modem is trying to re-sync to the cable frequencies or maybe he can't talk on the cable cause it's being used by someone else. Also a router between him and his game server may get bogged down periodically.

Maybe you could try ping plotter (www.pingplotter.com) and leave that run for a while. When you get your timeout's see if it is reflected in PP too. Also check your modem log and see if it's loosing lock and re-establishing it.

Do you ever get TV interference at the same time? Like from pagers? I used to have one UPN channel always pick up the local emergency pager frequencies; I could actually hear the tones and voice pages over the television. Something like that could cause the CM to loose lock, I think (I'm not an RF technician) It may be interesting to chart the times of the outages, there may be a pattern.

Many people are complaining of the same problem. I do not think that it is a signal issue. I am not familiar with the CA setup.

I believe Earthlink provide the DNS server over that way.

Out of curiousity, Snerdley, how has your service been in the last few weeks?

Well, I've had speeds since 9/26/01 ranging from 11 kbps to 1077kbps averaging 577kbps (I keep logs). Still lower than my expected 768kbps, but averaging a lot better than it was before then.

Between 9/22 and 9/25 I was getting super service, but then my power went out and the CM rebooted about 2am on 9/26, Immediately after that I got the above rates, higher than before the 22nd, but lower than expected. Would be perfect for a 512kbps package (a little over never disappointed anybody).

I haven't had any time to complain, except for the supernews.com screw up, but don't think that I'm totally satisfied yet.

How's the Fiber ring project going? When should we see that kick in?

With Chater Piplines security your lease expires every 2 hours and your givin a new lease for the next 2 hours so there could be some delay every 2 hours. I have noticed it pauses when starts to get a new lease through the DHCP server. If some other DSLRer could explain this better please do.
