[CDV] Question about CDV ModemI'm getting the CDV service at the house in a short while, finally being released here. I'd like to keep my modem active. Can you split the signal so that one goes to the modem, and the other goes to the eMTA? Or do I have to use that crap Arris modem that doesnt supposedly work with the 8mb speeds? |

If you use your own modem then yes you can use that just for internet. |

The Arris eMTA does work with the 8Mbps speed. Only in some markets it had a problem and I believe that was firmware related.
And yes, you can keep your modem for HSI and have your eMTA for phone only. |

Will they let you use your own arris telephony modem to not have to pay that $3 modem rental fee? (If it's all your equipment, like buying one off ebay or from arris themselves) |

I don't think arris will sell them to consumers, I'm not entirely sure. If it is off of e-bay there is a good chance it is stolen lol. My general answer would be no, you can not use your own eMTA. |

If you have your own modem, you keep that and they setup the eMTA seperatly. I beieve there is a 3 dollar charge. If you have a rented modem, when the tech comes out he will determine if both services go through the eMTA or if the rental modem is still needed (depends on setup, location etc) If the rental is still needed, you will only be charged the rental fee once, not twice. |

I refuse to try or even consider Comcast's already overpriced $39.95/mo phone service because they tell me they will tack on an additional $3/mo for the modem (right now I use my own for HSI) if I want CDV. No way. In contrast, Cablevision (my former Internet provider) charges only $34.95/mo for their similar phone service...with no additional modem charge. Screw Comcast. From the Optimum Voice Answer Center: Are there any additional charges or fees on top of the $34.95 monthly price for unlimited calling throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada?
Answer
There are no additional charges or fees. $34.95 is what you pay. You will be billed separately, via credit card, for international calls you make. |

Im not sure where the press release was that stated Comcast was to model their phone offering and pricing after Cablevisions? |

No, they should just charge more and give less, like they do for everything else. |

No one asked for your opinion on CDV. the guy/gal had a question, we tried to answer it. There is a forum for you to just spout off. |

Wasn't looking for a spout-off here, was looking for some answers. It's better than paying qwest's $50/month for basic phone service with NO caller id, voicemail, etc. and none of those stupid "regulatory fees".
To everyone else - Thanks for your help there, glad to know that I can keep my modem separate, $3 is not a big deal if I'm renting their stuff, especially if it gets replaced if it breaks. |

if you use the arris modem for both HSI and CDV there is NO modem charge. since you cant buy these modems and its required for the service they provide it free. you only get a modem charge if you keep a second modem for HSI only. |

Exactly, if both services cannot be run from the eMTA for some reason, they are not going to charge you for the modem and eMTA. However, if you have your own cable modem, they charge you the 3 bucks for the eMTA,so they're going to get their 3 dollars one way or another |

That is complete bullshit that they charge you $3 for the Arris modem. Which, again, makes me say something: Screw CDV and it's high charge. |

it's $3.. big friggin deal - seriously, $3 to rent a device that comcast repairs/replaces if it dies? Hell yeah I'm going to pay that. |

yea, the rental charge doesn't really bother me either. Thats 36 bucks a year. Comes down to what does it for ya. Lets say you buy a modem, then it gets fried by lighting,or one of the crumb snatchers spill grape drink on it..or whatever..you gotta replace it. If you rent it..BAM..they replace it.
But again..just like women...to each his own. I ain't mad at ya. |

In NJ they will charge you the $3 if you have your own modem and get the EMTA or you can use the EMTA for your internet. Here is the catch. If a tech comes out and says he can not put the EMTA near you comp for CHSI then you pay the rental on the CHSI modem and the EMTA is free becuase you need to have two devices. The trick is to get a tech to set it up that way. Just like getting a signal amp. if yuo call up asking for one then they charge you $85 bucks to install one if a tech says you need it it is free. |

Just had mine installed yesterday. The Arris modem is HUGE. I kept my other modem for HSI. Dont know about the $3, guess I'll find out when I get the bill. Service sounds good, better clarity than VZ. |
