Re: Server not found for diaryland page when using PCLOS

No, the correct page, the one that does connect in windows, is anathema-.diaryland.com. But thanks for the suggestion! The person's profile loads fine, as do a LOT of other diaryland pages, so I don't think it's actually a problem with the diaryland server either. And I've looked at the page html when on windows, and didn't see anything that looked to me out of the ordinary. I didn't think to save a copy of the page source, but have asked the person whose page it is to send me a copy of the html for the page, which I can post.

Works from Firefox in Linux as well (an older version, though, 1.0.7).

It is an older Redhat box. I can't get into specifics, as it's a machine at work

Well, I see the "server not found" page in Firefox for the link with the hyphen. I also see the profile page you linked.

I can't ping the site (with the hyphen), either, so I don't think it's a Firefox issue. Ping says that »anathema-.diaryland.com/ is an "unknown host".

can you say which redhat version #, and or kernel? Thanks anyway if not, knowing that it's not universally linux is still useful!
Speaking of kernal, for anyone trying to help me figure out the problem, I'm currently on 2.6.15, and the previous install it didn't work on was 2.6.12

That smells like DNS hasn't propagated yet.

HelWitch - is this a newly registered domain?

It looks up fine here:

% host anathema-.diaryland.com
anathema-.diaryland.com has address 216.150.10.159

And dig +trace finds the ns's ok...

Hmm does NOT work in Firefox 1.5.0.2 on FreeBSD 6.0.

The Linux box at work is a Redhat 7.x box (don't ask) with a 2.4.x kernel.

no, it's been around for at least 2 years, with no changes.

I tried with FF 1.0 (why I still have it on that box, I don't know) and same error - not found. 2.4.31 and 2.4.29 kernels.

That is bizarre. dig and host work fine, but ping does not. Something weird with the resolver and hostnames ending in a - before the tld? Very odd indeed...

floyd@pflog:~% dig A +short anathema-.diaryland.com @ns.benicetobears.com
216.150.10.159
floyd@pflog:~% dig A +short anathema-.diaryland.com @ns2.benicetobears.com
216.150.10.159
floyd@pflog:~% host anathema-.diaryland.com
anathema-.diaryland.com has address 216.150.10.159
floyd@pflog:~% ping anathema-.diaryland.com
ping: cannot resolve anathema-.diaryland.com: Unknown server error

I suspect it is the older libc on this RedHat box that is making it "work" Although ping doesn't find the hostname on the old RedHat box either!

Here's what one reverse DNS resolver, »remote.12dt.com/ , has to say about the ip address that pflog found (216.150.10.159).
