"pixeling up" doesn't mean Digital Simulcast is available or being used.

Many of the analog channels cable companies offer come from digital sources or are transported digitally. Cable companies (Adelphia included) convert them to analog for broadcast on their system.

So pixilation is quite possible on analog channels too...but the problem isn't caused by the coax distribution system or something in the house.

Also realize not all channels may be digital IF simulcast is starting to roll out in a particular area.

Yes. The box would handle the switch automatically.

The only difference you SHOULD see is a slight channel changing delay and a much clearer picture. (Especially on the Moto non-Phase III HD boxes.)

The LED on the front is indicating its in the diagnostic menus, strange that its not displaying on the TV.

Are you using an HD box? The menus are only displayed on the analog 480i connections (I think).

Does the TV power route through the box? (Maybe the TVs getting shut off)

Analog is broadcast normally.

A digital copy of some or all the analog channels are broadcast on different frequencies.

Analog TVs pickup the normal analog channels. No change here.

Cable boxes are programmed to tune to the digital copies, if available, when analog channels are selected.

In my particular area, the digital simulcast channels are at the upper end of our usable spectrum. This tends to cause more issues when corrosion gets in to the system or with long cable runs, especially thinner RG59.

To my knowledge Adelphia doesn't simulcast any channels in my area.
Easiest way to tell is to change channels, usually with digital channels there will be a noticeable delay (when compared to analog) when changing channels because the box has to receive enough data of a keyframe to create the pic.

To verify (IF this function is enabled, it may not be), tune to a channel, turn off the cable box, and push the select key within 2 seconds. A diagnostic menu should pop up. Arrow down to current channel status and take a look. The current channel number should be listed, as should analog or digital, its QAM rate, encryption status, and the frequency in MHz.
