[DW4000] Proxy issues - New Issue?

I have been using proxy for several months now without any issues. For some reason the last week or so it stopped working. I have called direcway and get the usual tech-less help. Anyone know of any new issues or something I need to change? computer that satellite is connected to is set to 127.0.0.1 port 83 proxy. On satmex 5. Here is my speed test

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 225 Kbps about 0.23 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB)
Download Speed is:: 27 kB/s
Tested From:: »testmy.net (Server 1)
Test Time:: 2006/05/12 - 12:05pm
Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 37.93 sec
Tested from a 1013 kB file and took 36.907 seconds to complete
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 22.52 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com)
Validation Link:: »testmy.net/stats/id-JZTL01E7A

Thanks for any help or input.

Quite a few people have been having the same problems. My proxy started working OK a few days ago but I started having problems again yesterday.

You can find more about it here:

the "proxy" will not typically increase throughput on speed tests. It's actually a WebAcceleration server, designed to shotgun webpage files at you to simulate a faster connection. As such, it's a waste of time to run DW4000 speed tests with "proxy on".

That said, there has been a recurring problem with slow webpage loading during peak times - for about the last two months or more.

Does anyone have any more info? Hughes says everything is fine. Using the proxy greatly increased my browsing speed and since much of my work is through a browser, the proxy issue has cut my production and in my case time IS money. Without proxy is even worse. If I had other options I would be there but out in the hills where I live this is my only option. There must be someone out there that can give me some insight.

Thanks in advance!!!

From my perspective, it's only an issue during peak usage hours. During off-peak hours, it's business as usual (for me). Having suffered six years as a Hughes customer now, I know better than to think their tech support will view it as anything other. Since I expect nothing meaningful from that avenue, my solution is to modify my own user times to coincide with off-peak usage times.

Greg: Are you considering a 7000 change? Do you think its just a matter of time and we 4000 enders will be slowed down to a crawl and have to change?

Overall my connection is still working close to par, this recent performance issue is just one more bump in the road - and I been bouncing down this Direcway path for ~six years now. But I am going to change within the next year or so, just haven't picked a vendor yet. I had pinned my hopes on WildBlue for a while, but their initial outing has turned out to be disappointing. Installers aren't jumping on their bandwagon around here either. Gave some thought to the HN7000-S more recently, but that too is starting to sound like more of the same. Am now starting to look at companies that build to spec, with connectivity and " support " from/through someone other than WB or DW.

HI, GROHGREG, long time no speak. You have consistently been one of the main sources of straight skinny here on DSLR, so I have question for you on this topic of proxy server: is there any alternative to use, besides DW's proxy server?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Therein lies the confusion. It is NOT a proxy server in the conventional sense. It's actually a set of web acceleration server addresses, servers that employ a proprietary protocol that Hughes calls HPEP (HTTP Performance Enhancing Proxy).

Hughes PC based systems connect to either "proxy" server addresses (HPEP) or DNS server addresses(TCP/IP) based upon the 127.0.0.1 enabled/disabled condition in their browser. When "proxy" is enabled, the browser is connected via the HPEP addresses listed in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hughes Network Systems\WebCast\HPEP\DownStreamProxy\Proxy (66.82.9.xxx). When "proxy" is disabled, the browser is connected via the first IP address listed on the DNS tab of your Advanced TCP/IP Properties. One of the biggest differences is the number of MaxConnections. The HPEP servers can make up to 150 simultaneous connections to your browser (faster web page loading). The DNS servers only make up to 15 simultaneous connections (other than browsing usage).

That's pretty straightforward. It gets more complicated when you move into the 60x0 and 7x00 generation of equipment, since there's also a form of proxy built right into the modem. So as far as a 3rd party direct replacement, I'd say the odds are slim. It might help if you read http://www.astracom.cz/DataSheets/Products/WirelessSystems/SatelliteInternetAccess/hpep.pdf, then maybe it might trigger your memory about some comparable product you may have seen in your travels.

Re: [DW4000] Proxy issues - ICS environment

I have a question concerning proxy configuration in an ICS environment. I know the correct 'proxy on' settings' but if I want to cancel the proxy at a client station do I also need to cancel it at the host as well, or are these independent of one another?

I readily admit to having a very shallow knowledge base on the topic of PC networking. But I believe the answer to that question is yes. The host is the bottleneck through which all the clients obtain access. If the host is connected via HPEP, so are the clients. I know there are plenty of (free) utilities to "switch proxy" from the host keyboard without opening the browser. But am unaware of any that might be able to do that from a client

Re: [DW4000] Proxy issues - New Issue?

I may be wrong, but I think it is browser dependent and not machine dependent. If the browser setting on the client is unproxied then the connection is unproxied. When the proxy messes up and I am on a client computer, I have to unproxy the browser on the client.

I can't be sure, but it would appear it is browser-dependent. I say this because if I run into proxy issues and kill the proxy on a client machine, performance improves without my messing with the proxy settings on the host.

Any further clarification available here? Seagreen? PetDude? Where are you guys when we need you (grin!)
