Opening ports for Motorola SB5101 cable modem

I need some help. I am a gamer and I play online games. Well certain games I play make me lag and I can't play anymore. My friend says that my game is running slow because the port number for the game is not open on the cable modem. SO, I tried port forwarding and such by typing in the IP address of the modem. I still can't get an option for opening ports. I'm really stumped too.. Please help me.

Port forwarding is a function of your router, not your modem.

Go to your router's configuration screens to setup port forwarding.

I don't think I have a router. I am technology incompotent at the moment with this technology. I've always had Dial up all my life. But now that I have cable, it is faster, but certain things are slow. Like I said, my games wont function properly. Do i NEED a router? Isnt that just for connecting this computer to another computer in your house. I have the ethernet cord connecting my computer and cable box. And My cable box also has another cord which of course is the Cable line. My friend said It had to deal with something with the modem letting me access things. I dunno.... I'm lost..

Routers provide a significant additional layer of protection between your computer and the internet -- even if you're only using one computer.

Without a router ... all ports are already "forwarded" to your computer. Any performance problems lie elsewhere.

You might want to read thru »Networking Forum FAQ for a good intro on how everything works.

So in other words... the reason my game isn't running fast and is lagging, is because of ANOTHER problem somewhere with the connection. Hmm.. that's limited.. So,is the best idea to contact my internet service provider. Because I KNOW it's not the game because it also has started to happen with my other games. Thank you for your help.

Ok, let's start w/ the basics:

Post your modem's signal levels -- accessible w/ »192.168.100.1

Then run a »/linequality test. Post the URL to the results.

That'll give us a better picture of your connection quality.
