Re: Modem usage not updating?

said by Typoprone2:

So, the darned thing is still not updating and the month's almost over. I wonder if Shaw's decided to update the graphs only once at the end of each month. I bet they get a lot of users complying to their limit (staying under 60 GB by clocking in 59.9 GB). I bet purposely trying to get more people to exceed the limit, thereby giving Shaw's reps the impetus to gives users a call and push 'em to ugrade their service. :|
I've done a bit of work to get myself ready for August. I used to have success at monitoring my own internet usage in the past before I had a multiple-computer LAN at home. It used to check out very close on day-by-day and monthly totals against shaw's meter.

Now with backups over my LAN from one computer to the next simple monitoring tools like Bandwidth Monitor Pro are not helpful since they lump the LAN and Internet traffic together. What one needs is a monitor that will separate the Internet usage from the LAN usage so one can have an accurate measure of their internet usage separate from Shaw.

PRTG grapher is such a tool - and it's free! It allows up to three free detectors and this is the number you need to monitor total usage (LAN + Internet), all Internet DL, and all Internet UL. The magic number is the sum of the last two. It took a while to figure out how to do this - it is not a standard option. There is particular "hoops" to go through for wireless connections as well but I managed to get that to work too. If there is interest I'll post some instructions for people.

I would be interested, I have same problem using Du Meter as it lumps LAN and WAN together.
