Cable ModemsI am going to be a refugee of Adelphia (You already know that » [SOCIAL] I'll be TW soon ) So, Adelphia will let you use whatever DOCSIS modem, though they do only provide tech support for their "Recommended Modems" Currently I have a Linksys v4 cable modem. It works fine, DOCSIS 2.0, even though it ISN'T on Adelphia recommended list, they will still provision it. I was just looking at the Maine Road Runner page and saw this> Can I Purchase My Own Cable Modem? While cable modems are often available for retail sale today, Time Warner Cable requires you to use the cable modem we provide. There is no discount on monthly cable modem service if you have purchased your own modem. So, does that mean I have to get a new modem from TW when we are switched over? And if I ever need (want) a new one I have to get it from TW only? Sorry, but to me this is BS--- |

That is a very good question, because I have always purchased my own modems since I have been with Adelphia. I don't want to be forced into modem rental. |

From the statement Kat provided, it reads that your own modem will work, but no discount for owning your own. Essentially, it appears that the lease is included in the monthly service whether you use their modem or not. |

I got that... But it was THIS that got me. "Time Warner Cable requires you to use the cable modem we provide." |

That's no help... It doesn't explain IF they require me to use their modem or if I can use mine. I don't care if I have to pay extra, so long as it is the same "extra" if I have my own modem or theirs. |

I have no idea but asking customers to use a provided modem has lots of advantages. You can control what modems and what Firmware is on the network.
I think its a good idea.

I would take the modem, test it out & continue to use it if it works as expected. Save your own purchased modem for a spare. |

I figure if theirs ever breaks I can call in and get mine provisioned, instead of waiting for a truck roll or going to the local office. The do allow customer owned modems in my area. |

The last I heard, it varied from region to region.
I'm not aware of any region that gives credit or a discount for a customer-provided modem. |

Hob Fine. But like Adelphia, you have a list of "Recommended Modems" that are supported. If I want to buy one and get one on that list, then it is supported by tech. But if I don't (like I have now) but it works, then I am on my own if the modem fails. That is MY choice. |

This is my opinion.
I hate customer owned modems.
It is a support nightmare.
I'd disable the internal pages to a Company provided modem as well.

But what about: "There is no discount on monthly cable modem service if you have purchased your own modem. " |

I don't like that at all. I mean if I have my own modem, why are they still going to charge me?! The switch hasn't even happened here yet, and already I don't like it. |

There's nothing *NOT* to like. They don't charge you to use their modem - it's included in the price. |

I think, at least around Houston you can use your own modem but there is not a difference in price if you use theirs or your own. |

But I should be discounted if I have my own, that's the point I was trying to make. I'm still getting charged whether I use their modem or mine, I don't like that. |

I would have to agree with if you have there or yours. Here in sc they have real CRAPPIE modems. sb4100 to 5200 if you can find one, and the S/A webstar modems that are worth a paper weight. The axxis modems are junk here.
Me, i own my own and it a peice of mind that i dont have something that is messed up when i get it.
Personal note: i have been though 7 modems in 3 years before i got my own and havnt had any problems with my own modem.

Now I always thought it was illigal for a provider not to allow you to use your own equiptment. I'm pretty sure thats what the law is. Except they're not required to give you technical support. |
