anon posted : I am about to do this in an office, I have used the Wireless Access Points (WAP) but they cost more and add another box. So using another box (and less expensive) follow a few steps (to maintain one subnet)
Step 1 connect the new router to a single machine (on a LAN Port)
Step 3 Set the router Lan address to your current range make sure it out of the range of the DHCP on the main
router
Step 3 Enable Wireless on the new one
Step 4 connect the wireless devices
Step 5 use the security on the router to only allow the MAC address of the wireless devices to connect, and optionally set wireless security levels)
Step 6 Turn off DHCP (the main one will handle this)
Step 7 Configure the wireless device to connect using a fixed IP address also out of the range of the DHCP on the main router, with the main router as the gateway
Step 8 now connect the router on a LAN port to the Main router. It will act as a switch for Wired computers and Wireless fo the Laptop

There are ofcourse small steps in between, restarting the router etc but this is the basics for the same SubNet

TO use it with a different subnet
Connect the new router to a computer on the LAN ports, Connect the WAN port to the Main router and set up the New router to connect through the MAin one. Make sure the new system is on a different SubNet
Enable the wireless and set-up security, remember you can limit to the MAC address of the Laptop for wireless and leave the DHCP on.

There are other connection method, but I gotta get to work now

Godd luck

MrM

Krypty posted : OK but one thing I also want the benefit of is my laptop gets a really low signal in my room upstairs. So in a perfect world id like to have another wireless router/switch upstairs so not only do I get what I need for my PS2 and PC upstairs, but also get a better signal upstairs as well for my laptop. Whats the best recommendation in this situation then?

Deep Dish posted : The purpose of a router is to have 2 different networks to communicate with each other. What that means is that (for example) you have a network downstairs with an IP Network address of 192.168.1.0 and the upstairs rooms would have an IP Network address of 192.168.2.0. In order for the 192.168.1.0 and the 192.168.2.0, you would have to use a router to communicate with each other.

In your case, you just want to "extend" your network (lack of a proper term) with just that 192.168.1.0 network. That specific network can support up to 253 devices, which is probably enough for your neighborhood. So what that means is that any IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 can be used. .0 and .255 cannot be used.

What waka said is correct. All you need is a switch or a hub (highly recommend a switch) to join those 2 switches together, and you be all set within 30 seconds of work.

waka4 posted : You won't need a 2nd router, you can do the same thing with just a switch or hub. Just connect the switch into a port on the Linksys and then hook up your PC and PS2 to the switch. DHCP is still handled by the Linksys.

Krypty posted : Hey guys. Heres the setup plan. I have 3 computers hooked up downstairs to a WRT54G router. I have one cable going all the way to my room upstairs to a computer. I want to add connectivity to my PS2 upstairs as well, but out of spots. Here's the idea.

I want to put a router upstairs, and then have my upstairs computer and my PS2 hook up to that. I know theres a way to set up the router to let that work. So first question is, how do I do that. Second question is, my main router will still be handling the DHCP through this mode correct? Thanks!
