Upload/Download Problems

Anyone know what could cause very slow downstream but only while uploading. ie. I'll be sending a file to a friend. They're on DSL so we get about 70-80kb/s then when I go to surf the web, download, or run a speed test it results in about 100kb/s downstream. When I am not sending to my friend the results are a consistant "1000+" kb/s easy. BTW, thank you Cogeco 10Mbit!!

I'm suspecting this could be a modem issue? I was suspecting the hub but I've excluded that now I have nothing else plugged in, going directly from modem > pc. As you can imagine, this really sucks. Help?

TIA

If you're saturating the upstream, the downstream will be hampered significantly.

Quick reply! Much appreciated.

Why is this? I should be able to get more than 100kb/s while uploading, no?? Cogeco 10Mbit service.

Thanks

You're only going to get ~70KB/s on the upstream side for 10Mbit/600k service. If you want 100KB/s+ for the upstream, you'll have to go to Pro which is 16M/1M.

Sorry, that's not what I meant Snick. I'm very happy with my service now. I didn't realize by maxing the upstream the downstream is cut so much. I limited the upstream now and I'm getting results around 800kb/s on the speedtest. It's a good thing I rarely upload.

If you happened to make that kind of upload often use cFosSpeed that will automatically do that for you. You will have full speed upload, but you'll be able to download as well, since cFosSpeed will prioritize the ACK packages required by the download.

When you download, there are small packages sent to the server that say that you've received the latest packages and you're ready to go on with the next one, this happened really quickly, but when your upload is saturated the small ACK packages can't leave your computer fast enough to get a reasonable download speed, so what cFosSpeed do is slow down everything that upload to allow fast delivery of ACK packets.

It's only few buck and I can't surf without it.

Get your copy at www.cfos.com, be sure to get the cFosSpeed, not the cFos which is a DSL dialer, cFosSpeed is designed to be used with a cable modem and/or a router. There is also a free trial, for you to test it.
