Skippy25 posted : I didn't expand on my whole thought. I think this network should be ran by 1-3 companies with great government oversite. I would prefer a private company, but a corporation would be fine as long as the oversight is there.

pa_grape posted : I'd be afraid the government agency needed to run such a nationwide network would be just as greedy as corp/stock holders, but with no incentives to compete either.

I'd also be afraid to rely on a government agency to repair, upgrade, and invest in newer infrastructure. (You think big corporations are slow to invest...)

Also, with who's money would the government be using to run and administrate such a network. Not mine I hope.

RadioDoc posted : Knock yourself out. I prefer to live in the real world. You can keep your fantasy "government is good" life far away from the bright lights and harsh economic climate.

In case you were sleeping for the last six years, Ameritech was required to separate the ISP and the DCLEC and the ILEC by the very regulators you seem to think have the inclination, ability or energy to provide you with your idyllic broadband utopia where the government owns the facilities and everyone leases access.

You have no facts to back up your claims, so you keep shrieking louder and louder. Guess what? The rest of us know better.

My "favorite ILEC"? You can certainly do better than that. Or maybe you can't.
--
Toolmaster of La Grange.

kapil posted : Frankly, Doc, that is a fight that needs to be fought.

Your favorite ILEC sells its DSL at a loss to kill competition. It's all a lie. The true cost is higher because resellers pay MORE than retail customers for ATT DSL. ATT also claims that the ISP is somehow a different legal entity than the phone company...when everyone except the regulators ATT keeps in its pockets know the truth.

The real price of DSL, alas, is much closer to what Covad is charging...mostly because the tons of outdated regulation the FCC insists on keeping around.

It is high time the ILECs be broken into pieces...give the infrastructure to local municipalities...and make all LECs, the I and the C kind lease the facilities from local government...level playing field for all.
