you do realize you have no question mark
...
I would say - for games ... you don't need an expensive sound card ... I would get the cheapest
I have a sound-blaster pro pci ... or something ... nothing fancy

Gizmo, I looked into this subject a bit recently because I was buying a new computer. I play games but may not be as serious a gamer as you are. I am not familiar with the premium (i.e., very expensive) cards, but I know that Turtle Beach cards have gotten good reviews, and I ended up choosing a Turtle Beach (Santa Cruz) to go in my new Dell system. On the other hand, I couldn't say that the Turtle Beach cards are clearly superior to their SB counterparts. If you are buying a new card or building a system from the ground up, I think you should consider the new SB Audigy Gamer. Take a look at the review on GameSpot.com, which called it "the new game sound card to beat." Note that the card apparently has some compatibility problems with Athlon-based systems.

I've now owned the Turtle Beach Montego 2, and the Soundblaster Live! I have a Soundblaster Audigy on order. I've preferred the Live! cards.

I would go with the Audigy, just to stay current, and their basic Gamer card is no more expensive than anything else....

Actually, the compatibility issues are with some VIA chipsets, not with Athlons.
