Yes Microsoft will probably release Vista "on time" but until they do no one knows what that is going to mean. Buy what you need for today with a look to having hardware that you can upgrade as you go in 2 years or so. All the games that are out now, and ones that are likely to come out in the next year or 2 will run on DX9. Build your system now while prices are still fairly stable, hardware prices will most likely jump with the demand for "new" systems once Vista is released.

I am encouraging my friends to buy AMD AM2 motherboards, they have a good price point and the AM2 CPUs are a great value. And looking at the socket A and 939 track record, we will still be able to get new CPS for AM2 in 4-5 years. I'm not going to get into the whole Intel vs AMD thing, I just like AMD more. My current pick would be any of the NVIDIA nForce 590 chipset motherboards, but if I was buying one right this minute I would get an Asus Crosshair »www.asus.com.tw/products ··· elmenu=1

Get a good middle of the road video card, I have 2 EVGA 6800XT 256Mb cards running in SLi. I bought mine last year for about about $200 total, and they easily out performs my friends Sapphire X1900 512Mb card wich cost him ~$250.
