who uses a floppy drive?

Hey Everyone!

I am getting ready to build a gaming rig and i don't know if i should get a floppy drive or not. The only use i see for a floppy right now is to flash the memory other than that i see no other uses for a floppy drive.

Who still uses a floppy drive?

Absolutely. Needed for BIOS flashes (although I hear there are some motherboards you can actually flash from Windows), and also needed to install RAID drivers if you are going to set up SATA RAID in your system (again, this can be done by integrating the drivers into an XP installation CD, but this is honestly more of a pain than it's worth).

They're only like $10; you might as well throw one in.

I don't use it very often, but it is nice to have when needed. For the money it will cost you, you're best off having it and not needing it, rather than needing it and not having it.

Why don't you get an external USB one? Most of the BIOSes for the newer systems can emulate is as a real floppy drive so that you can boot from it and use it in DOS mode, and yet you have less cables inside your computer. That way, it's not in your computer most of the time since you don't need it, but if you do, you can just plug it in, do what you need to and then take it back out.

I recently took mine out as I have no need for it. One less thing cluttering up the inside.

You don't even need an external USB floppy drive. How 'bout USB flash drives? When the USB drive is properly formatted, and with motherboard support for floppy drive emulation, you won't need floppies at all.

I usually stick to CD-RW's for BIOS upgrades or stuff like that. File transfers are handled by the LAN .

I still got one and use it from time to time. Good for RAM and disk checks. I know most modern utilities offer a CD install, but I'm just old school and like the floppy drives.

when your system crashes and windows wont boot, there is nothing better than being able to bust out a 98 startup disk to get thing moving again.

I still have my Sony from a couple of years ago.....I used to need it for RAID drivers when loading XP and to flash the BIOS on my mobo.....but now XP and Vista recognize my new systems RAID automatically....and my mobo supports flashing from windows (which I avoid) and it supports flashing from cd-r's (so it says....have not had a need to mess with it yet).....

so personally I think my days with the floppy may finally be numbered!

Exactly what I was going to say. I may rarely use mine (actually haven't for almost a year), but I do have 'em (2 actually).

They cost about $7 now.

In the big picture of a new machine, it's a no brainer.
Put it in for nostalgia if nothing else ...

Take one out of an old machine someone is throwing away, along with the floppy cable.
