redkingca posted : I haven't used a floppy disk in almost 10 years *sigh*. For about 5 years before I pulled the last 3.5" device from my desktop case, I was using a LS120 drive. Similar to a floppy drive but it is a boot-able IDE device instead(what the ZIP drive was supposed to be).

The LS120 could read/write regular and 2MB 3.5 floppies but it also took 120 Mb disks. The nice thing about the 120 Mb disks is that they are stable and don't deteriorate over time(good for storing tax returns, ect.). And I used to have an install of Win98 SE on a single disk that I used for playing my older games. I still have a small stack of disks for archival(since CDs and DVDs aren't stable) and for diagnostic purposes. I keep meaning to put the drive into and external USB enclosure, but I mostly use my USB key for troubleshooting and xfering files.

BTW I have my 128 disk 3.5" floppy version of Win95 around to threaten the younger techs with. And I know where to get a working 8" floppy drive when I really need one. :D

edited for postscript.

neonhomer posted : Yeah, I use one....... as a paperweight!!!!

I have a couple of 3.5" floppy drives laying around. My "server" has one, just in case.... I've only used it twice since I have had it... once to flash the BIOS, and then again when I used a custom DOS 6.22 disk which had a old game I wanted to play.. (Anyone remember a game called "Scorched Earth"?).

Somewhere around here, I have one of those older Teac 2 in 1 drives.... a 3.5 and a 5.25 in one... I used to have it in my old Athlon server until I stopped using it. That drive stays in a sealed static bag. That drive is worth it's weight in gold to me!!!!

My old Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop has a 3.5" floppy drive... I use it occasionally to play Microsoft Flight Sim v4... (the version that ACTUALLY fit on a 1.44 Floppy!) I cant launch it from inside Windows because I DONT HAVE WINDOWS on it.... I have Ubuntu Linux on it.....

My HP zx5000 laptop doesnt have a floppy drive (but there is a port for it on the motherboard), and my Apple G3 B&W doesnt have one either, but it has a Zip 100 drive....

DOH!! I just forgot.... My Sony digital camera uses a 3.5" floppy drive for saving pictures to. I have the Floppy Drive to Memory Stick adapter, but it is slow as hell... I usually just use a floppy, and then transfer it to my Dell laptop or put it in my server and share the drive to copy to my "main" laptop.

Anyone remember the FULL HEIGHT 5.25 floppy drives? I used to have one of those bricks hanging around for the fun of it.... it worked too!!

I wasnt around for the 8" discs....
--
Someone want to donate tool points to me??

"I reject your reality and subsitute my own!" - Adam Savage, Mythbusters

Pirate515 posted : Why don't you get an external USB one? Most of the BIOSes for the newer systems can emulate is as a real floppy drive so that you can boot from it and use it in DOS mode, and yet you have less cables inside your computer. That way, it's not in your computer most of the time since you don't need it, but if you do, you can just plug it in, do what you need to and then take it back out.
--
Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies...
A MESSAGE to the RIAA and the MPAA: You shouldn't wound what you can't kill...

knightry posted : Absolutely. Needed for BIOS flashes (although I hear there are some motherboards you can actually flash from Windows), and also needed to install RAID drivers if you are going to set up SATA RAID in your system (again, this can be done by integrating the drivers into an XP installation CD, but this is honestly more of a pain than it's worth).

They're only like $10; you might as well throw one in.
--
It takes two to lie, Marge.
