BellVictim4 posted : Re renting vs buying DSL modem.

eBay has 1 Alcatel STH located in Canada (Vancouver, BC).
- 2 hours left on auction
- current price = ~$10
- shipping = ~$10
»cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI ··· 82616280

Seller even says: "I guarantee it against DOA and will gladly refund it if it doesn't work as advertised!"

As I see it someone's gonna get that badboy for less than $30, delivered to their front door. And if one's DSL doesn't work out then one can sell it, likely for a recoup of all monies except 1-way shipping costs.

Confronted with such economics, can there be any sense to a rental? Receiving & returning a modem would run someone $20 anyway ... and they'd have no modem to keep, to show for their money (if the DSL didn't work out).

(FWIW I IM'd the OP to point out this ebay sale but got no acknowledgement so I'm mentioning it to 'the world' ... I IM'd only a single person so as to try to avoid a bidding war between DSLReports forum members {which would torpedo the appealing economics of this solution to inexpensively test-driving DSL - the buying of an inexpensive, used Alcatel SpeedTouch Home}).

No, I have no relationship with the ebay seller.

I can vouch that the model number cited by the seller is the same as my own Alcatel so it'll work for TekSavvy or any other Ontario DSL provider.

anon posted : I was hoping to rent as well if for only one month.

I was going to buy a modem from the GB...but even with the GB it would have been an expensive mistake if I wasn't able to get Teksavvy in my area. I'm in Sauga, and the area should be 100% fine, however I wasn't sure about this older house.

So, is it possible to rent a modem, for a 30day period to test out the service????

BellVictim4 posted : This link will answer you some (unlimted vs 100GB):
»Re: Rogers alternatives

In order to decide you'll need to know/estimate how much data you transit, since you'd prefer to be on the Peer1 (aka 100GB) for the improved ping times to make your gamimg as good as possible. But as you know, if you go over 100GB then it's (IIRC) $3/GB.

AIUI you could start off on Peer1, and if you saw that you were exceeding 100GB then you can switch (once for no $ penalty) to the Cogent.

In terms of how the DSL works - well, there's lots to read in these here forums. Since you can't definitely know your final DSL speed until after it's ordered & installed you may wish to follow the advice in this thread:
»Should I really switch from Rogers to Bell?

Notably what I said there:

quote:
In general about DSL - if you want to make the switch from cable to DSL get the DSL in and keep the cable alive, while you verify the DSL is good enough for you. Depending on how far from you to the C/O (or remote) you may not get 5mbit speeds, you may only get 1.5 to 3 (I get 3 nowadays, and in my last place I got 1.5) ... both are plenty fast enough for me but may not be for you. FWIW both Bell and all DSL providers can only guestimate what your final DSL speed will be ... you have to have the service go *live* to know 100% what your speeds will be. Now if you have neighbours on DSL they can maybe tell you what their sync rates are, which is a very good indicator (but no guarantee!) of what speed you'd likely achieve.

Teksavvy from rogers

KPaul posted : Hi all.

Love the forums here, and love reading the hated for rogers :)

Anyways, I have a rather common question.

I have rogers 6mb service, and have had their top service for many years now. I always get 6mb download on http, and uploads are always 800k as well. However, the torrent stuff has finally pushed me over the edge. I want a change.

I have seen teksavvy people on this site, and when I called them up, they are always prompt, and very cool about the questions I have (kudos on that).

What I am wondering is what type of service I should try. (I'm planning on renting a modem for a month from them, and try the service so I can compare apples to crap).

I see the unlimited, and the 100gb cap one. What are the real differences on them?

I game on-line, and obviously download with torrents, and other site based stuff. I sometimes go over 100gb, so that's where I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I forgot to add, I have always had cable, and was wondering how DSL works with the net (speeds, uploads, downloads, ect.)
