drjim posted : I remember my Dad taking me with him when he went to get one of his tires fixed years ago. The mechanic found the leak in the water tank, marked it, dismounted the tire, and patched it from the inside. I remember him using something that looked like a giant C-clamp to hold the patch and glue together while it applied heat to vulcanize the patch to the inside of the tire. Pretty interesting stuff when you're 7~8 years old. The last time I had a flat fixed at the place I always get my tires from, they dismounted the rim, and patched it from the inside. I was surprised they didn't use a plug, and the owner, a little old guy who's been in the business for over 40 years, said if he EVER caught one of his guys plugging a tire, they'd get fired on the spot. He said the action of running the cleaning tool through the belts causes the individual strands of the belt to break, and that they'll "pull back" and bunch up, causing a lump in the tire that you can't balance out. He said it depends on the tire construction, and some brands are much more sensitive to a plug than others. He said he'd rather take the time to do it right than have his customers come back with tires that "thumped" on the highway, and yet were in balance.
--
One man's Magic is another man's Engineering.

ReVeLaTeD posted : Fix-a-flat does ruin chrome. Dunno about aluminum. But over time it can ruin certain chrome plating. I've seen it happen.

I had a Sebring that came with the standard chrome rims. It was fine, until one day I noticed the right front tire was flat and would constantly go flat after like a week. I decided to get it checked out, the monkeys at Firestone showed me the interior was all flaked and corroded, plus the metal around the valve stem was corroded such that air was getting out from there. They wouldn't put sufficient bead seal to fix the problem, so I had to buy four new rims from a guy that happened to be selling the proper size for cheap. They explained to me that the fix-a-flat, combined with the water that sprays when you fill up your tires at a pump, will mess up the interior chrome if the rim wasn't plated properly - and the Chrysler default rims are very poorly plated.
