Good luck with it. I am shopping for a new PC to replace my 5yr old desktop and wasn't sure whether to go for the Quad or just the Duo Intel processor. Can Vista make use of a quad processor?

Yes. AFAIK as long as it supports SMP it should support any number of multiple cores/processors. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tho $1000 is way too much to spend on a processor for 1 month of bragging rights (and if I had the money to burn I'd probably do it too).

$1K is too much for a processor especially when they are coming out with newer processors every few months bragging rights don't go for very long. What the heck do you need all that processing power any for. What it does something 10 secs faster or you can frag someone faster? Oh boy big deal. I rather put the money away for a rainy day and get a value processor and have fun with it. But I'm still on a AMD 2500 XP and it works fine for me with 512mb ram,on an Asus board. No not a heavy gamer and don't plan on upgrading to Vista anytime soon. XP is fine for me. Vista is a lot of hype.

I plan on buying a new computer soon. It's going to be an Intel processor, but I think I'm getting lost on the purpose of all these "cores" they have now, and would one of them actually benefit me, or would a Pentium 4 work just fine. About the only thing I do is surf the net, and I burn DVD's a few times a week.

I went to one of those Core Duo chips last month. Its not bad. Seems like some programs utilize it better than others though. I came from a P4-3GHz, and would have stayed there. Except I got sucked into the PCIe forced upgrade net. I got tired of looking all over for newER video cards to stick in there. They kept getting more and more expensive, if I could even find them.

(sigh)

Just wait or build your own if you can.

PCI-E is the more popular now for GPU but if you need to upgrade you do what you have to do. I personaly am trying to wait as long as possible Im very happy with what I have.
Hope you enjoy your new Core 2 DUO sounds nice.
