My question is, as I am currently using OV (no POTS lines), can I use a DSL modem in my house?

Thank you.

Here are a few helpful facts for you:
1. OOL and OV are cable only and the OV is provided by Cablevision ONLY if you have Optimum on-line service.
2. DSL is a Telephone company product provided over copper lines using a totally separate and distinct technology. OV is proprietary to Cablevision so the idea of installing a backup will only give you a backup for the Internet, Not Optimum Voice.
3. You can get Simulated Dry Loop DSL from Verizon for approx 35.00 a month which gives you the Internet over a geographically diverse route than the cable company.

Now to get really funky, you could get a dual WAN port router and use both connections simultaneously as sort of a load share seeing as you'd be paying for both of them and what better way to see if each is working than to use what you are paying for.
Hope this Helps.

WoodyLI posted : I don't think he was asking if he could use OV over a DSL because we all know you can't.

He wanted to know if it was even possible to get DSL since he doesn't subscribe to any POTs service. Is that correct?

In any case, yes you can get DSL as long as it's available in your location. You probably have a POTS line to your house already but simply not hooked up to any service. Without a current working POTS phone the DSL provider may not immediately be able to determine if DSL is available at your location but you may already know the answer to that (i.e. a neighbor has DSL or you previously had DSL).

Another drawback is you might have to subscribe to a working POTS service to get the DSL but that may depend on the provider. You can probably get a super cheap local only POTS service that you don't use for anything except maybe incoming calls for $20/month or so and that would be all you need. Best to ask the local phone company.

xirian posted : No. Optimum voice goes over the cable line through your modem. If you internet doesn't work, optimum voice isn't going to work. DSL will not work over it, you'd need to get a dry loop from verizon and go over their copper.
