Re: WTF is up with telus im gettin pissed off

Yup, something is happening at Telus... I was having trouble few months ago with evening sloooowwww internet speeds. It was supposed to pick up by Feb/Mar. Well, it did a little bit thank god! I thought the problem was over. WRONG!!!!!
It is now worse than it ever has been!! BOTH my laptop and desktop have troubles connecting. At times, they freeze up and time out and can't even connect to the homepage! It's rediculous! And like the rest of you it starts at around 5pm during the week, and starting at 5pm on Friday it lasts until Monday.
Although, I do have flucuations... for example, It was horrible 2 hrs ago here (8:30pm on Saturday laptop froze trying to open up homepage) but about 30 mins ago (10pm) it returned to 'normal' speeds. So go figure.
I don't know what the hell is going on, all I know is last year it wasn't too much of a problem, but as of late, I have an issue with paying $45 per month for internet that can't even connect in the evenings!!!! Beyond unacceptable!!!!

Whether you can get TTV in ADSL1 mode on an old ADSL1 card though, I'm not sure. There may be some hardware limitation that requires the brains of the newer ADSL2+ cards to deal with the TTV data.
It's definitely possible, but impractical for technical reasons. TTV users will be phased to ADSL2+ network eventually anyways. That's the reason they have ADSL2+ ports in the first place.

The current TTV users are not in the new network but they are on the new ports. Telus has not begun to transition everyone to the ADSL2+ network but the hardware is already in place in most areas. The only advantage though, when activating the ADSL2+ network, is they get better coverage of areas (especially to people that couldn't get ADSL) and other benefits to improve downstream rates. I'm not going to get too technical.

I don't know about the HDTV crap you brought up but that isn't the main reason why to transition people to the new network.

UPDATE: well, I called telus today, and ::GASP:: they fixed my problem over the phone!!! He said he 'updated my profile' so that I am going through a different 'route' that is less used. I am finally back to where I was when I signed up for Telus. YAY!!! I am now one very happy camper!

'we don't support routers'..

of course telus wont support other's routers. They would only support 2wire gateway and dlink 604+.

for example: why call linksys while in fact you have a netgear router it just as the same as that.
there are so many routers and they have different configurations..

And there aren't many different computer configurations?

I don't exactly know what's being referenced as the 2+ "network". 2+ is a spec for last mile only. Maybe what's being referenced is the ATM vs. Ethernet network?

TTV customers are on DMT2 or ADSL2+ ports, depending on what's available.

All HD subscribers will have to be on 2+ ports. HD is technically ready-to-go for 95% of subscribers on 2+ ports, in my estimation.

All TTV subscribers are on a different 'network', as I understand it, than regular HSIA subscribers. They use different paths, routers, etc. on the backend, through the Telus network. ATM is being phased out. I don't know if there are plans to move all subscribers to the new network, though I'd imagine eventually.

I'm also imagining there is not a lack of capacity. Capacity to gateways outside Telus' network can be bought at will, and there is plenty of capacity within the network. I imagining speeds are fluctuating for some users because the engineers haven't properly utilized the resources, but that's speculation.

Also clouding the issue is the always present possibility that some users have something wrong with their line. I always recommend calling support, suffering through Tier One - and getting a service appointment booked if necessary.

I personally haven't noticed any drop in speed, but there are enough users on this forum saying they have had troubles to believe that there have been some snafus. I would not say that it's lack of capacity (TV doesn't take a hell of a lot, in relative terms), but rather engineering problems with the network.

BTW, IANA Network Engineer

Do you want me to offer a solution? My solution is regulation, not privatization. We could perhaps request a prorated billing system? We would pay for what we are getting. Today I would pay 28% of the current billing. My system has not changed the network has changed.

Okay buddy, first of all, you are taking the test miles and miles away from your location. If I were you, to increase your credibility that is, use this speedtest, www.speedtest.net and select the closest server. If the speed problems still persist, than we'll believe your frustration on your problem.

Yeh that's correct. Telus must use Ethernet to support their (HD)TV service and ATM is not practical.

Is this speed deficency an american issue? Do we have a bad router some where in the chain? New Jersey is only on the other side of the Hudson from the Big Apple and yet the speed to the big Apple is very good.
