Do you still need an installer for CableCards?

Does cablevision still require an installer to come out for cablecards? Or can I just go to the optimum store to get one? Try calling but their sales offices were closed (according to the message)

I want to upgrade to IO Silver, but I simply don't have any open "windows" on weekends to sit around and wait for an installer.

I believe they have to do it, they used to anyway. Call customer service to find out.

If I remember right, you can ask them to call you a half hour or so before they show up so you can run home if you're not already there.

If I didn't have a 90 minute commute that would be a great idea. Oh well, guess its gonna cost a half days pay to get io.

you can have the card installed on a weekend. They did it for me. you just have to ask and let them know its impossible for a weekday to do it. they will do it on a weekend.

I knew they would install on a weekend. As I mentioned in my original post I didn't have a free weekends. But I am just using it as an excuse to not go to my in-laws on saturday

$46.99 to push a card into a slot not bad for 15 seconds work.

But we keep complaining about fees and keep on paying them.

If you threaten to cancel they will probably offer an alternative.

Does FIOS offer a cable card?? Fee??

Yes FIOS offers a cablecard at a monthly fee. There is no option with FIOS to pick up anything, unless you drive down the shore to their 1 location, so EVERYTHING requires a site visit at a fee.

I sort of understand the reasoning. It is still problematic. Even with FIOS folks report needing to have the installer yet multiple cards to get it working.

It's not that simple. They have to pair the card to the TV which in my case took over a half hour. From there they have to call the central office too, especially if there is any issue in activating the card. This took my tech over 45 minutes, so you're talking over an hour there.

Push the card into the set.
Call HQs.
And spend 30 minutes in the truck catching up on paperwork.
Back into the house for 3 minutes to say it's now working.

So I guess the question is -- is there any company in the industry that provides CableCards for customers to do a self install? Because it would appear its SOP for any company, whether it be CV or Verizon.

Well, the appointment was for 8-11. The guy shows up at like 10:20 with a cablebox in his hand (not even sure if it was an HD box or not). Apparently he thought it was a cablebox install and didn't have any cablecards in his truck. Apparently the warehouse is closed on weekends, but he called someone else (another installer) and went to go pick up a cable card from him. He is supposed to return between 11 & 2.

Not sure where the mixup occured, but the installer was very nice and made an effort to locate a Cablecard for me. I was just hoping to do some things this afternoon and now I am stuck at home

See, now THAT is just screwed up.. Now, make sure you demand a credit for the service call visit.

Shortly after my last post the installer called and told me that he was running late and should be here in about an hour. Well it is now 2.5 hours later and he still hasn't shown up. I called him back (using caller id) and left a voicemail and then called cablevision and they have contacted the dispatcher.

I just don't understand why they won't allow us to try installing cablecards ourselves. Even if I ran into a dud cablecard I could have gone back to the Optimum store like a dozen times already today. Since there is no way I am going to pay the installation fee now, cablevision is just wasting my time and their money right now.

Well after all this BS I called and complained to Cablevision about the install date. I was told that I would get a call back from a "manager". On saturday evening, I got a call and was informed that they wouldn't refund me the cost of the install. The guy even tried to upsell me on the phone to the triple play package. I don't think it is appropriate to try and upsell a customer calling about a complaint. I simply told him that after this experience I will probably be dumping cablevision soon anyway.

Its a shame, I used to rave to my friends about OOL and the tv service. Oh well.

You can always just go to a Customer Service Center and ask for a replacement of your current cable box. They wil give you a new card with the new box they give you. Then and all you have to do is hook the new box up and turn it on.

That would work fine - unless you don't have a cable box and want to use a cable card in your TV. For that, I don't think there is any way around a service call. The restriction is procedural - there is no technical reason I can think of that a customer could not install a cable card.

I think you are confusing a CableCard and the card that that goes in the Cablebox. These are very different things.

That isn't a CableCard. CableCard is a PCMCIA-like card that plugs into a CableCard compatible TV so that a box isn't required. Totally different thing than what you are referring to.. See »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CableCARD for more info.

Is it open? And I don't think you can just go there and pick up, unless you have better info then what I've seen posted.

It's open as far as I know. I'll have to stick my head in at Denville one of these days. The installer who put in my mother-in-law's FiOS told me you can get extra STB's there, but who knows?

One of the folks on the Yahoo group recently posted that he needed to get some exchange work order created by the FSC (FIOS Support Center) before he could get the exchange of his box done.

The front page story on BBR gave me an excuse to throw more money away (Re: TiVo, SDV, and CableCards). I will now try watching T.V. with a CableCard. If it will be part of the standard in years to come, I'd like to be one of the early adopters.

My tech appointment is tomorrow. The $50 charge does seem a bit excessive but I'll see if the charge is justified.

Are there any BBR's on the OOL forum who currently use a CableCard?
