Boston to Philly

Hi guys,

My fiancee and I are going to be relocating to Philly for May 1st from Boston MA. I will be working in Center City and have one car. She will probably either be working or going to school in center city depending on how things turn out...

We are looking for a good area to get an apartment in, spending around 1,000.00 /per month for rent. It would be ideal for a 2BR apt, I have one car so I would need parking, and since we currently only have one car it needs to be close to public transportation so either I could get to work or she can go where she needs to. Most likely I will be driving my car to work so it is also important that traveling the subway or public transit is safe. Also if I could get an idea of the average cost of utilities?

How will my cable package change from that which I have now in boston? Is it a moto or SA market? 750mhz? 1ghz?

You could live in Center City(Downtown) but it will cost you. Even in Notheast Philly it will cost you alot. I beleve all of Philadelphia uses "Motorola" digital cable boxes.

Having lived and worked in Center City for almost 20 years, I can say....

If you live and work in Center City, you will not need a car. Parking is very limited. It's actually cheaper to rent a car on weekends and take a cab occasionally than owning a car (insurance will run $2,000+/year). I know it is hard to imagine not having a car, but the majority of people living in Center City do not have one. A co-worker just moved from the burbs to a condo in town, and he thought he would need his car. He quickly (within 2 months) gave it up.

Public transportation is generally safe, depending on where you are going and when. You will wind up walking to wherever you want to go anyway, as Center City is very walkable.

I think you are overly optimistic on the rent for a 2BR, though. Philadelphia used to be cheap for rent, but no longer. You can probably get a very, very nice 1BR for that price. Here is a link to a good source for rentals (it is the main Center City paper and is the best source for rental listings)- I specified the 2BR link, and these are pretty representative prices for decent areas in town: »www.philadelphiaweekly.c ··· 1#loc_85

Now, all that being said, it really depends on exactly where you wind up. If you live in Northern Liberties (a fringe area of town), you may want to keep the car, as there are few services there (no supermarket, etc.), plus its really too far to walk to town. Rent MAY be a bit cheaper, but the area is still gentrifying, public transit not as plentiful, and not as safe at night as most other areas. Houses are VERY expensive, but IMO, it's not worth the price.

Philadelphia is a Motorola market, and I _think_ town is 750.

Feel free to PM me.

I agree with Owlyn.

If you find a 2BR apt in downtown for $1000/mth - you'll most likely be in North Philly in the ghetto.

I didn't mention in my original post- there are "student" type 2 BR apartments in town for under $1000, but they will be small and lack any amenities. Anyone over 30 would probably find them unappealing.
