what is the best drive cleaner/erasor?Free and not free, what are the best disk erasors that can:
1) Run from a boot CD and clean a disk.
2) Clear all unused space on drives being used.
3) Works "In situ" in the background.

1. DBAN, as linked to above. Freeware. 2. & 3. Eraser which will scrub empty space and work in the background, plus it includes a copy of DBAN as well for total scrubbing. Freeware. |

No doubts for me Eraser still one of the best freeware tools around.
If you are going to get it please read the forums first. There have been some issues with all releases since 5.7, which for me has been rock solid. I'm still not quite sure about the 5.8 releases. Afaict the latest release has been OK, juts waiting a bit The developers deserve our thanks for maintaining this great tool; just be a bit wary. |

Yeah, I already tried erasor because it was what I was looking for, (5.8.2) but my Windows Explorer kept locking up with it, I was like, WTH? Is there a way to get 5.7? |

There appears to be an issue with Erasure if this option under General Options is checked. Look to see if you have this option box checked marked.
Edit - Preferences - General
Uncheck Pseudorandom Number Generation
This should stop the lockups in Explorer. |
