I am sure they analyze the source of all their sales by sales channel. That is just a basic function of the marketing department. And if the retail upgrade channels are not performing as well as they expected, marketing is being tasked to do something about that. Wait and see how many ads they buy for mainline prime time TV shows as a guide.

Does Microsoft actually gauge how many Vista sales are from forced purchases, such as when you buy a new computer, it comes with Vista. (Until recently when Dell offered XP for this year). How are the retail sales of Vista been? I'm ready to buy a new PC, and I'm thankful Dell is offering XP, because now I don't have to buy a Dell with Vista and then buy a separate copy of XP and install that.

Sales of Windows Vista have helped Microsoft post a forecast-beating 65% rise in third-quarter profits.

The world's largest software maker said net profit in the three months to 31 March was $4.93bn or 50 cents per share, up from $2.98bn last year.

The move helped drive the firm's first-quarter revenue up 32% to $14.4bn from $10.9bn in the same period a year ago.
I guess Vista sales are doing better than some expected or in Apple's case - hoped against. The sale of the new Microsoft Office also helped a lot.
