leleupi posted : Thanks for all your help SDKiwi! I tried another brand new ethernet cable and got the same (bad) results. So, that just leaves either bad NIC in the computer or bad NIC in the modem. My computer is pretty old so it's imaginable that the NIC suddenly broke (although it was working just fine a week before in NYC). I'll be buying a new computer in a few months and will test again then. I am planning on reporting back here if I remember (just for statistical purposes.) If I still have the same problem I'll just have to test a new modem, then. If the problem continues, well...then I will have no idea what the cause is as we seem to have considered pretty much everything here. There is obviously nothing wrong with Cox's service and their cables as the USB connection is working perfectly within its speed limits.

For now I am happy with my speeds. 5 Mbits is something I would have almost killed for back in the mid to late 90s and early 2000s. I think I'll "survive" for now. ;)

Thanks again for your prompt help!

leleupi posted : Alright...reporting back. I got great tech support through the forum (private messages) and on the phone actually. Thanks Cox guys! I appreciate it! I received a phone call today from a Cox technician (while I was on the road) who asked me to try the USB cable instead of the ethernet connection I was using.

I just did that and the upload problems and the lag are gone. Surfing is superfast. However, now I seem to be capped at 5 megabits per second download and 500 kilobits per second upload. Even with the problems I had surfing and uploading with the ethernet connection I was still getting up to 10 Mbits download speeds.

Here are some test results with various test servers:

LA

Palo Alto

New Jersey

New York

Any idea what's going on?

Also, does anyone have an idea why switching from Ethernet to USB would make such a huge difference. I'm tempted to agree with the tech on the phone who suggested that my ethernet adapter might have issues, but then it was working just fine less than a week ago back in NYC with roadrunner. Well, at least the cable between me and cox is not to blame it seems. That's a big relief.
