[northeast] Enable Ethernet possible?

My FIOS install is on COAX, I have internet only.
So, it is just a coax run from the ONT to the Router in my office.

Is there a way to enable the ethernet (it is off now) on the ONT, or is this something Verizon must do.

If I were to get TV, do they just put a splitter from my Router coax to the televisions? I actually have a separate coax run in my office which connects the televisions, (now on Comcast) so i was thinking if I ditch Comcast I could just put a splitter right in this coax line?

No way to enable ethernet it has to be done BEFORE the ONT is activated.

yes to the second question. A splitter will be added to from a Coax LAN.

Sure about that? Other users have been able to go from being on coax to cat5 somewhere on page 10 of this thread. They just had to run the cable themselves and call the FSC/post in the Verizon Direct forum to enable the jack/disable the coax.

Yes you can switch to Ethernet. Simply call the FSC and they can reprovision the data from MOCA to Ethernet. As was stated though, you need to run the Cat5e from your router to the ONT yourself. If you want a Verizon tech to do it, there is a charge for it.

As for TV the router requires a coax connection in order for you to get the program guide, widgets, on demand/ppv, menu, etc. A Motorola NIM can be used instead, but I doubt they are readily available anymore.

I remember reading somewhere in the FIOS TV section of this board of other users being able to get NIM100s to use with their D-Links (or their own personal routers) recently. That or they've picked up units from eBay. YMMV I guess.

No reason why someone couldn't set the Actiontec to function as a NIM, though...

Yes it can be done, they did it for me.

Yes it can be a bit difficult to get them to do it. Here are some tips.

1. The way I had it done was to ask one of the techs on the support forum here to do it. They were great to deal with. Did it the same day I asked.
2. If you call just tell them you want the Ethernet on the ONT enabled. Don't go into details why. If you start talking about wanting to use your own router, you will get the run around if the tech doesn't really understand what you want. This is the mistake I made.
3. Don't let them dispatch a tech, waste of time. Another mistake I made.

Thanks for the replies. The Actiontec and COAX seem to be doing the job. The wireless is actually pretty good, and keeps connections well. The only advantage of ethernet for me now (which is not great enough) would be removing that huge brick (actiontec router) out of my room. For the life of me, I don't understand why it is so big. Is there really something inside that needs the room?

They have downsized the brick a bit. »Actiontec MI424WR (small form factor) on the way.
New installs can end up with either one, since these just came out to the field.
