cablevision webstar modem dropping connectionsFor the last month, the webstar modem drops all connections for a minute or 2 and then recovers. It does it many times a day. I first thought it was my router but then i hooked up my computer directly to the modem and it still happens.
it seems to be getting worse everyday.
any diagnostics i can run? any other ideas?
maybe I need a new modem...
thanks |

mine did the same thing. just swap your modem at a pmt ctr and you'll be happy.
don't try to analize it or fix it. just swap it. |

Could be the modem, or could be the signals. Might want to check you signals before wasting your time replacing a good modem. |

how do I go about checking the signal? |

well i went and got a new modem last night and I am still getting dropped connections. It is either the cabling or the service. I wonder if it could be that one of the splitters (-3.5db) is causing the problem. |

Sorry, I didn't see your post - might have saved you a trip. Could be a splitter. Follow this link to see your signals: » 192.168.100.1Our faq needs some updating... » Optimum Online FAQ » How can I check out my signal levels? |

I am having the same problem since last month. Replaced the modem for a new OV modem. Same thing. Strangely enough, sometimes it does not do it for days and sometimes it goes off and on every few minutes. A technician is coming over to check the line. |

it seems to happen more in the morning here. I wonder if it is related to the usage in my neighborhood. If you get a chance, let me know what they find...
Thanks,

John, here is an update you were waiting for. The tech just came by. Ironically, the moment he walked in, the Internet had gone down and he could see exactly what was happening. The timing was just perfect, LOL.
He did the reading and noticed that the signal was bad. He traced the line and said that the connector from the main outside line had become a bit loose throughout the years.
Also, he installed new connectors outside on the poll. He said the old ones looked bad and could've caused connection issues.
I am going to be testing it throughout the day, he is going to call me back before 5PM to make sure I am OK. |

I was having the same problem and only after numerous phone calls to support, 3 tech visits and multiple modem swaps an engineer was dispatched and found a physical problem in the cable a block away that was causing framing errors. Be insistant with OOL and keep records of time and duration of downtime. Good luck |

thanks
I swapped out two of the 2-to-1 cable connectors that are in my home and it seems to have made a difference. very little down-timne now. I don't know if that was the cause of the problem. But if it acts up again, I will have a tech come out.
thanks for the info.
