[Vista] Guess who's getting Vista early?Yea...I was going to wait until SP1, but I will need to start knowing the ins and outs before I start working in the Tech department at work. Which I hope is sometime before the summer ends. So... I plan on getting Home Premium tomorrow morning. I have two days off anyways to play around with it.
Are Vista 64bit drivers out there pretty mature or should I stick with 32bit. |

Airwolf,
If you are going to do customer support I would suggest Vita Ultimate, and a very big bottle of aspirin.
Vista Ultimate so that you will have everything there is on a Vista system. Invariably if you go with a lighter system the first person that comes in will ask you something about Multimedia, his name will probably be Murphy. The reason for the bottle of aspirin is obvious, help you cope with Vista, Customers, and your Boss.
64 bit or 32 bit (I am going to foster a lot of flame work with this but what the heck):
IMHO go 32 bit there is no real advantage to 64 bit your machine is not going to perform better it will only be able to address more memory. If you put 4GB in a 32 bit system let me know if you ever use more than 1.5 GB, you would have to open everything you have installed to even come close.
You are not going to find many apps that are designed for 64 bit and drivers and hardware that can take advantage of the 64 bit architecture will be hard to come by.
Just an opinion and not meant to incur the wrath of those 64 bit folks out there or even suggest that 64 bit doesn't have some value under certain circumstances. |

I'd go with Vista Ultimate 32bit. I've been using it since release and I'm very happy with it. |

$499.99 is a bit of a stretch for me. I do understand to know everything, but by working on a few Ultimate computers/laptops at work, I think I can get the gist of it. I've only dabbled with Vista...once or twice for a very short time. So, I was just thinking of getting Home Premium just to get into the game so to speak. Also if it resolves this sound card issue, that would be gravy.
Home Premium is $299.99 and even that is a bit much, but I shouldn't fall behind in technology.
If I was on a full-time schedule, I would consider Ultimate, but I just started out. Only been there for a month and a half.
Anyways, thanks for the input, I'll go with a 32bit install after all. |

I went x64, have been happy with it. Only thing that ticks me off is Sun and Adobe, no 64 bit plugins for IE for Java or Flash. Seems kind of pitiful to me. |

I guess the consolation prize is that everyone in the x64 world is getting screwed over by them equally, no Linux x64 plugins either. Sun is supposedly working on it for the release of 1.7, and Adobe claims to be as well, although there appears to be precious little progress. |

Upgrade reasons. It's going on a custom built computer.
I just bought it. Going to go through and backup what I need then away it goes. |

Do you mean future upgrades and it not working? I had that problem when I put in a new video card and hard drive, but all it took was a quick phone call to solve it. It's worth the savings to me. |

I couldn't see a reason to go x64 myself.
I'm only getting 2.8G's off my 4G's of memory (680i, E6600, 8800GTS)... but what the heck. The worst game I've seen only takes the system slightly above 2.0G's right now.

I suppose you're using the 32 bit version of IE or Firefox to achieve that. |

If you are going to get familiar with Vista to further your career at work. 32 or 64 bit makes no difference, all you need is to find out how to use it and be able to do certain things, answer a few end users questions. I'll stick with 32 bits as a start. |

Have it installed now. Just installing the usual programs and games. Too bad Creative doesn't have it's audio console centre for Vista. The plain audio console doesn't have EQ controls.
So far I like it. No hiccups so far.
I'll have to get used to the start menu. I keep thinking it branches out when you select All Programs. |

Type the name of your program in the dialogue box presented when you press the Start button. You'll be pleasantly surprised. |

Yea, I kind of figured it was like Run.
I don't know if it's because of a fresh install or what, but it feels more responsive than when I was using XP. |

Make sure you factor in 4gb of RAM, 10,000RPM if you want the same performance as Windows XP. |

Wherever it's from, it's factually false. |

That's if you buy the retail version. Why would you do that? You can buy a 3 pack of Vista Ultimate OEM for $575. You can get the single Vista Ultimate for below $200. » www.newegg.com/Store/Bra ··· icrosoftsaid by Airwolf:Where did you get that information from? I got a Toshiba laptop. Core2 Duo, 2GB of ram. Totally stock out of the box configuration and it feels like I am using XP on a 266mhz with 128mb of RAM vista home premium pre-loaded. Then I got a Dell desktop with 512mb but Dual core AMD 4000+ CPU and 7200rpm hdd and it is just as slow. Vista Business. Then I disabled all the unless services, all the eye candy it looks just like windows 2000 almost and it is just as slow. |

Oh and Home Premium (OEM) is $111 about the same price as XP Pro. Vista home basic is $90 or so OEM. |

Seems to be fine here. I have about 1.3GB of free memory. On XP I had about 1.6GB. |

I'm still new to vista too, so that was a little embarassing. (didnt notice ie had a 32 and 64 bit program till i was poking thru the menu and saw "IE, and IEx64") |

The paradox is that they included the 32 bit IE for backwards compatibility, but because of it, there is less pressure on Sun or Java to develop native x64 plugins. It sure is frustrating. |
