Not really, you're just an ass.

True if you drive with the utmost of courtesy you will end up getting delayed more. I speak from experience as this is how I drove for my first year or two of driving.

I find that being assertive is better than being aggressive, or truly "defensive" -- and I do signal.

In a jam, I'll admit that if no one's making a hole for me I *will* start gradually edging over into the other lane. When the signal fails, that gets me a hole.

I've driven in Texas. Not everybody there drives like you, you just think they do because you drive like an asshole. Drive with courtesy, and someone (maybe not the guy beside you, maybe not the one behind him, but somebody back there) will treat you with courtesy too. Drive with courtesy, and plan what you're doing, and you won't have to speed up and force / sneak your way over.

That's when using the turn signal becomes useful.

In heavy traffic, where this encounter is normal, there is no passing lane. You don't get in one lane simply because it's going faster than the others, then bail into the other by speeding up and signalling (or not signalling). You get in one lane, and stay in one lane.

If the other lane is moving, you either wait until there's a gap in the other lane, and safely merge, or you signal then wait until someone makes a gap for you. You don't sneak into place by speeding up and forcing your way in.

If you miss your exit, you go to the next exit, then double back. Nobody is obligated to let you force your way in front of everybody simply because you didn't plan far enough in advance.

People will treat you with courtesy when you do so to them. When you drive like an asshole, you encourage borderline assholes (like me) to drive like assholes too. Then you encounter someone like RFC, who will totally treat you like an asshole. Then you'll whine about how you had to sneak into the other lane, because nobody was willing to "let you over".

"Waste of time" If you consider the .0025 seconds it takes to flip a knob a waste of time, there is certainly a lot of other things that are a waste of time to you. I don't know where you are driving at but your turn signal isn't a indication for everyone else to yield for you.

Anyone that can't use their turn signal is simply a inconsiderate prick that has no consideration for the other drivers around them. Its NOT that difficult to turn on a turn signal, hell the car turns it off for you in a lot of cases.

I don't think signaling is required by law, except for large commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, etc.)

I don't stop at the stop sign because a cop is around, Ior even if one isn't, I stop because it makes sense to stop.

Sometimes, driving your car leads to surrealistic, almost deja vu, experiences.

Has this ever happened to you?

Nah, don't bother. Nobody ever signals when turning here.

Yes, this would be a good time to signal. I saw somebody else signal, at this very spot, last week.

The other guy is signaling, too.

•Here's a rare one. Maybe you've seen this. Heavy traffic. Someone uses his turn signal, only planning a lane change where some other car is present. The driver of the other car warns the first driver off, using his horn.

A traffic collision is prevented.

•Maybe you've followed a cop thru traffic, and observed that he doesn't use his signal where he should.

What's up with that?

Note: Obviously the choice there is, if you use your turn signal, and they speed up, they don't want you in front of them. Thus, you shouldn't CUT THEM OFF.

I'll use turn signals when I'm merging with another freeway when there's a lot of cars. Also in bad weather I always drive with headlights on and use turn signals.
