JPL posted : Thanks for the feedback. I do agree with you - the dvr that works best for someone really depends on what they're looking for - it depends on how they're going to use the box.

When directv replaced tivo with their new DVR (the r15, e.g.), there were many fights on this other directv forum regarding which was better. One thing I noticed is that the preference someone showed really depended on how they primarily used the box. If you spend 95% of your time just watching recorded material, then Tivo won hands down. If you spent 95% of your time watching live TV, or even accessing live TV, the r15 won hands down. If you were split in your viewing, well it became a matter of which paradigm you preferred.

Personally, I watch alot of recorded stuff, but I also like to surf. As a result, I like the dvr/live tv integration. Like I said, I thought directv's box was the best I've seen with that - it was totally seemless. I could start playing back a recording, e.g., then I could surf the channels. If I found something else I wanted to watch live, I would just select on it. The playback would stop, and the live show would start playing. Then I hit commercial, and I hit the 'prev' button, it would actually take me back into the recorded show, and resume playback without a hitch. Very nice.

The 6416 has some of that integration, but not nearly to the same extent. I also agree that tivo isn't useless as a cable box. But it's main focus is to act as a DVR.

Thanks for the feedback.

The issues you mention (wouldn't really call them 'problems') still exist - with the exception of the slowness you cite. I have found each successive TiVo includes better hardware and is significantly faster than the one before.

The issue I agree with is the inability to bring up the guide (or any menus) while watching a recorded program, and inability to bring up menus while watching Live TV. That is my sole gripe with TiVo.

But my usage is different than you say yours is. We mainly record shows and then watch the recordings. That's about 85% of our usage. TiVo is much better with that usage (DVR functions) than Verizon's DVR. Pure and simple. If I was more of a "flipper," the Verizon DVR operates much better as a pure-and-simple Cable Box than a TiVo does.

The TiVo isn't as useless as a cable box as the 6416 is as a DVR, though.
JPL posted : Don't worry - I caught the humor in your response - I didn't take it personally. You're right though about not being able to remove channels from the guide. That would suck. But actually it makes it more like my old DirecTV system - you couldn't remove channels from the guide on that system at all either. You got around that by setting up a favorites list. To be honest, I would rather have the ability to have multiple favorites lists than just a single favorites list and the ability to customize the guide. I like being able to switch the list based on what I'm doing (e.g. with DirecTV I had one list just dedicated to the XM music channels, so if I felt like listening to music, I would just flip on that list, instead of scrolling all the way to the music channels).

But I've gone WAY off topic here - this thread was about the new Tivo box. Personally, if I could get VOD through a cable card, I'd be all over the tivo box. It's a great system, and it's understandable why some folks get attached to it.

There were some things I didn't care for with my direcTV Tivo - if you wouldn't mind, since you have the series 3, could you hit some of these for me? I'd like to know if these are still issues with the series 3, or if these were specific to the directv version of the tivo boxes:

1) One touch recording. I really like this feature alot - hit one button and the show is scheduled to record. Hit it again, and you have a series set up. My old tivo didn't have that.

2) Better guide functionality. There were several items that I found lacking with my old tivo, that I really didn't like. For example, there was nothing on the guide that indicated when a show was set to record - unlike the moto dvr that puts a red circle on those shows. Also, I didn't like the fact that the guid just overlaid the live TV feed. There was really no way to change that. Unlike the new IMG, apparently, which gives you options on how to display the guide - even one which puts the guide transparently over what you're watching. Also, I like the idea of having color coding on the guide. Sounds stupid, I know, but I had that with my first DirecTV receiver and I liked it alot. On every subsequent receiver, that wasn't there. The fact that they've added that with the new guide is something that I'm really looking forward to.

3) Along with that - is there integration between live tv and dvr functionality with the series 3? I really didn't care for the two operating modes with tivo - you were either in live tv, or you were in tivo central, but you couldn't watch live tv while mucking with your recordings, e.g. In this capacity I thought the DirecTV DVR (the new one) was the best overall. Everything was very smoothly integrated between the live TV feed and the DVR functionality. I liked that alot.

4) Guide performance - I found the guide to be painfully slow with my old tivo. Scrolling took forever.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of watching stuff live. Many hardcore DVR users don't care about the integration to live tv (they never watch anything live), so the deficiencies with tivo on this front doesn't phase them. But if tivo has fixed these items, I'd be much more willing to take another look at this new box. I am willing to give the new IMG a real go, though.

JPL posted : Wow was THAT a spin on what I said :) In seriousness, I do think they'll update functionality at some point. Hopefully in the very near future. I just think it's smart to start with the current baseline in terms of functionality. Recoding the s/w, while at the same time introducing all sorts of new capabilities, would just lead to crappy s/w. I'd love to see some updates to make this thing more functional - the lack of that type of functionality has been one of my biggest nits against fios from the start. But I also understand how these things work. As they say in business, never promise on what you can't deliver. I believe DirecTV did just that. The result would be more than just ticked off customers. It kills your reputation as a company (DirecTV I think did alot of damage to themselves on that front). I think the right approach, as I've said, is to rebaseline with existing funtionality and then enhance.

Others have argued - well why not do it the other way? Update the functionality on the existing s/w and THEN change the interface. That would make sense, except for one thing. Verizon currently doesn't own the s/w. They need to take ownership first. Which is what they're doing.

I think folks also need to draw distinctions here. This update affects the guide predominantly - yeah there are some enhancements that effect DVR functionality (being able to modify skip and jump-back times, e.g.) but really it's not the DVR functionality that's being updated here. I would hope, in the future, that they would start incorporating DVR functional changes into the new s/w. That's when you may see things like dual-live buffer, or the ability to reorder your recordings, things like that. With that in mind there are some real changes being incorporated into this new s/w - but they're almost totally changes in the guide s/w, not the DVR functionality. I think many people were hoping for more DVR functional changes (I know I was), which is why there's the perception that this change is purely cosmetic.

JPL posted : I'll be one of the people coming to Verizon's defense on this, then. I believe they're doing this the right way. While they've gotten slammed for just making the new guide a prettier version of the old (very little functional changes), I think that's exactly what you want to do. They're taking control of the guide s/w. Microsoft did the old guide, and Verizon is doing the new. When you adopt a s/w platform like that, you really want to limit the changes in the initial roll-out. Go pie-in-the-sky with your updates, and you produce a piece of s/w that doesn't handle the basics correctly, much less all of that extended functionality. Look at DirecTV. They went for the golden ring the first time out, baking everything under the sun into their DVR platform. What resulted? Totally inconsistant s/w, that performs like a dog, and can't handle the basics correctly. They've improved, no question about that - but when they came out with their SD DVR, they were forced to throw s/w updates out every couple of weeks for a while trying to fix the major bugs. I had two of those units, and neither could get caller id working correctly, much less record series correctly.

I don't believe a lack of a DLB is an indication of a lack of expertise. DirecTV doesn't have it either, and they were the ones who first adopted Tivo as their DVR platform of choice.

My point here is not to slam DirecTV - please don't misread that. I like the functionality of their DVR. I'm just using them as a case study in what NOT to do when you adopt a platform. I personally think that Verizon is going about this the right way. Yeah there's some functionality that I would love to see baked into the new guide, and I hope that they're responsive to such requests and that they add that functionality in future s/w releases, but I would much rather have a box that handles the basics of what it's supposed to do with pared down functionality than a box that has functionality out the wazoo that doesn't work quite right.

Now that Verizon has control of the s/w I hope they'll be responsive to user requests for future functionality.

nhey posted : Tivo series 3 allows you to use both tuners at the same time EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT RECORDING A PROGRAM ON EITHER ONE. Verizoff's DVR only allows you to use both tuners if you are recording a program on one of them. This is a HUGE advantage the Tivo has. This means you can be watching one program on one tuner, let's say a football game, with the buffer working, and switch to another channel your wife wants to watch, let's say FOOD network, and watch that program with it's buffer working. When you switch back to the football game you can use it's buffer and rewind to where you left off (up to 30 minutes earlier). You can't do that with Verizoff.

I would be more interested in a 320 to 400 GB HD model, even if it were $349 or $399. In bulk buy prices, the cost difference between 160 and 320 GB should not be that big. I have not followed the Series 3 discussions very closely, but I gather that while people have gotten external SATA HDs to work, they are still not officially supported and don't have the user friendly features one would like for supporting eSATA drives.

If I don't like the new IMG 2.0, I could see dropping the 6416 DVR in favor of - this would add up - a Series 3 Tivo with one multi-stream cable card ($3/month?) and the $10/month non-DVR from Verizon to maintain VOD capability and as a backup if the cablecard craps out. But I would much rather have a 320 GB or 400 GB internal HD Series 3 for the extra space when not messing with a eSATA drive.

JPL posted : You forgot the fact that you can't use the multi-room capability either. But hey for that money you'll be able to tell folks "I have Tivo!" And you'll be able to say stuff like "I tivo'd that last night..." In seriousness, tivo is a nice platform, and some folks really really like it. It's consistent and robust. Plus when you buy the box, it's yours. You're no longer paying the lease fee for the DVR (of course, you are still paying the $13/month, or whatever, service fee). I would imagine that the price will quickly drop too.

KenAF posted : Tivo is set to unveil a new, lower-cost version of the high-definition Tivo Series3 between August 5 - August 12.

Like the Tivo Series3, it will record two different SD or HD programs at 100% original quality, while you simultaneously watch a third, previously-recorded program. It will also ship with MCARD support from day one, meaning one card (@ $2.99/mo from FiOS) will be sufficient to support all FiOS channels with dual tuners.

According to the thread, the new Series3 "Lite" will support all the software features of the current Series3, including SP, WL, KidZone, Online scheduling, Digital music player, Digital photo viewer, Home Movie sharing, Amazon Unbox, and Univ Swivel Search.
