It only pops up a reminder with dismiss option. That's fine if you're home. But I want it to change after no action is taken. Good for recording through PC input. I don't want to use a DVR.
maxwelltf posted : Everyone already knows I'm at the bottom of the fan list for the new "improved" IMG. I've said it was unnecessary to revamp the whole GUI and I stand behind that. Adding functions to the old GUI would have been smarter - the new IMG offends my sensibilities. Unfortunately (and this is a problem with the industry) there just isn't good competition among providers, so I am probably stuck with Verizon and this ridiculous guide.

In the meantime, that won't stop me from posting additional observations or in this case, bugs. There are so many missteps and backwards-quirks in the new IMG. Here's a nice "feature" the old guide didnt have: it's a short video clip. The IMG got confused after a simple sequence of key strokes and the banner showing "paused" was stuck on the screen. Pressing play or pause or exit no longer worked. The unit had to be powered off. This video also reinforces how miserable the banner design it - taking up too much space, providing irrelevant info, i.e. we dont need the program description when FF or RW a program WE ARE ALREADY WATCHING, and of course the relevant information about time and current playback position is small and less-obvious.

Enjoy....
<TABLE WIDTH=96% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

MVI_2497.AVI
8,764,641 bytes

Mark F1 posted : Fort Wayne was supposedly the first city to get the new 2.0 guide. And, it performs fairly well. Well, we get Nickelodeon/Nick Jr./Nick At Nite on there 24/7, with the local listings scrolling at the bottom of the screen. Anyway, there is much to like about FIOS TV, despite the things in the guide the we don't like (such as no view by channel option, wrong or missing guide info) But, I enjoy seeing shows that I haven't seen since I was growing up- Man From U.N.C.L.E., 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, I Spy, The FBI, - so overall I am pleased with FIOS TV, but, perhaps, when there is another guide update, they will address some of our concerns. You have to look at the remote? Just learn where the other buttons are. The new guide works way better than the old guide. Forget about the 33% of the screen being used up. It is functionality improved if you take a step back and really think about it. Just learn the remote commands a little better and then the menus will be off the screen that much faster.

Also, I'm also in CA and I think you have a real problem if you're waiting 35 seconds for menu commands. Supposedly Motorola has the firmware to enable it, but Verizon has not deployed it. IF I knew Verizon was planning on doing it in the next 6 months I would wait, but if it is 2-3 years off, I think the Modded out Tivo HD would be better. The other thing is I have a VZ DVR with a dying HD with lots of shows on it I still want to see. If I had the Tivo HD I could use the winmfs program to copy from the going bad tivo drive to a new drive and retain all my recordings. :)

Mark F1 posted : Yes, when the fall TV season starts is when there is sometimes more than one show we want to watch on at the same time. The Verizon tech who installed our FIOS TV said the DVR had over 80 hours in SD. And, so far, I've not had a problem recording with the DVR. As to the functionality of the guide, ease of use is #1. I can do without cosmetic changes, different colors, skins, etc, it's just that it's much more difficult to find something I may want to watch. Search works when you know what you want to watch, and especially if it finds it. And it works even better if you know that it will be on, and you just don't know when. Finding something that I, or anyone, might want to watch, or record, if only we knew it was on, is what I find most challenging. Apparently there are bugs that don't effect everyone, but for those that it does, it's a problem. When we attended a FIOS TV demonstration in July, we were wowed by the picture, the channel offerings and the price. We never even considered that maybe the guide wouldn't be as easy to use as what we were used to. But, as with Windows, bugs that are identified can usually be worked out. We've had Verizon local phone service for many years (when it was known as GTE) and FIOS internet since last November. We are very satisfied with both. Hopefully the problems with the guide will be addressed to our satisfaction, or as best they can. Especially if they make it easier to use. Mark F.
