Oh, wait you're from Kansas...didnt your state vote against crazy theories like evolution....

Exactly. As I recall, ATM would mean one side of the conversation would require a different amount of bandwidth versus the other, such as 90kbps to talk, and 40kbps to hear. Last time I checked, uLAW (aka G711u) is 90kbps both ways. The other part of the argument concerns "telephony signals", but there is nothing that resembles what an ISDN or PRI connection when it comes to SIP. All of the packets are sent in a header that resembles an e-mail address, so it is NOTHING like standard telephone signals. How is this even related, when the signaling in question does not resemble the original PSTN service? Makes ya wonder... Hmmm...
--
SIPPhone/Gizmo # 17476200648 / PIMPNET Chatline / Ran by Asterisk & Slackware 10.1.

amungus posted : "didnt your state vote against crazy theories like evolution...."

Yes, that is essentially correct. The attempt at correlating my location and inability to read seems biased though :(.
Science should be taught much more (often, and with gusto) than it is (everywhere). I was actually somewhat disappointed when I found out how bare the cirriculum was in high school with most science classes. Don't get me wrong, I loved physics, but having a broader variety of options would have been nice. Surprisingly, a high school I attended in Cheyenne as a junior had a bit more variety and an awesome electronics lab ;)
Fortunately, I have been done with the public school system for some years (Before the whole fiasco started).

As for the patents, it was (in the context of) a joke bngdup. I have read some of the material when it initially came out, though I'll admit I haven't exactly followed the entire story very closely. The whole thing is kind of silly IMHO; we're talking about a telephone's method of transport here... the rest of the Bell's should sue all of them for ripping off the idea of a handset. (//sarcasm\\)"We ARE All Your Base. All your telephones are belong to us. You have no chance to survive, make your time"(//sarcasm\\) :o

rradina posted : I thought Vonage had ~2 million subscribers. As others have cited, the article said 12,000 subscribers.

I'm not sure Vonage can go out of business in this manner. With 2 million customers, it would be pretty hard for a cable company or telco to pass up buying them on the cheap. The buyer should be able to rapidly reprogram the customer ATAs to use their own equipment or, if profitable, keep Vonage's infrastructure in place. I would guess that Vonage has a lot of long term agreements with local CLECs and any likely buyer would assume those contracts -- unless Vonage filed for bankruptcy and voided all the contracts. If a telco bought them I would guess that they could make a killing since they could migrate the POTS termination from CLEC equipment to their own and then aside from the cost of SIP infrastructure, the rest of the monthly fee is mostly profit.
