When you record HD from your DVR, does it show up fullscreen 16:9 (SD 480i) on the recorder, or does it put letterbox black bars around the picture. That was the big issue with recording from a DVR (HD downconverted to SD).

anon posted : As others have stated... a dvd recorder can work with the fios dvr, the main problem is the fact that the HD content is down converted to letterbox, SD shows the same as what is seen on the screen. When I had Direct TV, the HD content off of their DVR would record full screen on my dvd recorder...of course the content would not be 720p or 1080i, but atleast it would not show up as letterbox.
Mark F1 posted : I have a special type of coax cable that came with the tuner card, one end is designed to connect to the card. Radio Shack will have the little audio cable to connect your tuner card to your sound card, if need be. Using the software disc, you can install a pretty nice TV application with a movable and resizable screen, volume/mute, channel up and down, a number keypad, plus other features accessible by clicking on a button. I use the Verizon remote to control the STB connected to the TV across the room. That way I can either watch the 27 in. RCA set or the TV application. The audio from the TV, as well as the audio from my computer, goes through my Sony stereo system that has two nice speakers and a subwoofer. The seperate radio application may work best with the supplied antenna, but I don't use it as my Sony stereo has AM/FM stereo, dual-cassette player/recorder, and 3-CD changer. Plus my Technics turntable. Dell has any driver updates I may need. Power VCR II is from Cyberlink. Mark F.

Mark F1 posted : I have the TV Expert 350 tuner card and software, from Tiger Direct. Hooking your STB to a tuner card is a snap. You may need to run a small cable from the audio out on the card to the audio in on your sound card (SoundBlaster, etc). KWorld, ATI TV Wonder, Hauppauge WinTV, Leadtech, and Avermedia are names that come to mind. I spent just under $50 to get the TV Expert 350, on sale. Tt has a radio application, which is only occasionally useful, as internet radio often has more variety, and, a TV tuner card connected to a FIOS STB gets you Music Choice and Urge. It has a remote control, as well. But, beyond the quality of the card, the quality of the software and how the controls on the TV interface work and the features it has is important. I also have Cyberlink's Power VCR software and TV application, for doing video capture. With a big enough hard drive, and perhaps a DVD burner (such as lightscribe) and burning software (Power VCR, Roxio, etc), you could turn your PC into a PVR and/or a DVD recorder. I often watch the TV across the room while on the computer, the screen is bigger, but sometimes I like to watch it on the PC. I've put a two way splitter between the VCR and the TV and ran a cable to the computer so I can record an occasional show and watch it on a resizable screen while I'm surfing the web, printing greeting cards, burning a CD, scanning family photos, posting on messageboards, whatever computer activity I want. Plus, recently aired CBS shows are online and AOL has some of the Warner TV library online, both free and streaming video is great with FIOS internet. And, if your computer is connected to a stereo system, which is best for CDs and online music, the stereo TV audio sounds great. There are tutorials on Tiger Direct that could be a big help, too.
Mark F1 posted : My set up is virtually unchanged from when I had cable. The incoming line from the wall is connected to a splitter, with one line going straight to the back of the Sharp TV (and audio cables going from the TV to the Aiwa surround sound system). The other line connects to the Verizon STB/DVR, just like it did with a cable box. High-end A/V cables connect the box to the Sony VCR and the VCR to the Samsung DVD player/recorder. From there, a digital optical audio cable (toslink) connects to the Aiwa system and a S-Video cable connects to the TV. I can record a show with the DVR, and if I wish, copy it onto a blank DVD. I have lots of movies, shows, etc. on videotape which I put onto disc when I get the time. Or, I can record directly to the VCR or DVD recorder. By switching the input on my TV remote, I can watch a local channel while recording something onto disc (a movie on Showtime, for example) or while DVRing 2 other movies/shows. That all works well, and will untill Verizon does away with it's analog channels. By then we hope to have at least a HDTV set in the living room. But, our TV here in the family room has an STB and a VCR, so that's another means of recording something if need be. It's also good to have a diagram of your hookups (what's connected to what and how, and where each coax or A/V cable goes) put in a safe place. I showed mine to the Verizon installer, and while he seemed a bit skeptical, everything worked. Mark F.
