JPL posted : Yeah, that's no different than Comcast around here - they run fiber in their trunc lines, but certainly not out to the home. To call that a fiber network I think really does border on the fraudulent. BTW, my brother noticed the same thing when he signed up for fios in northern, NJ. They rolled into his town, and the salesmen just went door to door, signing up everyone on his block. He had to wait over 6 weeks just to get an install.

I think the only reason my install happened within a few days of me calling is because fios had already established internet service around here for over a year at that point.

FIOS effect on cable

anon posted : I know that in Plano, Texas when Fios arrived the folks at Comcast had a line out the door with people turning in equipment. Verizon totally underestimated the demand for the service in this area and had to ramp up the hiring of installation crews rapidly.

From what I know of the situation, more than 20% of homes in the Plano area had Fios within 6 months of the service being offered. I have no idea what the number is now.

I do know that after we left Comcast, they called 3 times offering us deal after deal after deal to get us to come back. No dice. The picture quality on Fios is rock solid compared to the grainy crap I got on some Comcast channels.

A few months later, Time Warner took over the Comcast cable franchise in this area. They've come in with an agressive campaign to win people back, but it's borderline fraudulent. TW's running an ad now talking about the great picture you get on their "fiber network." I'm sure they use fiber in some part of the network to get the signal to your home, but it isn't the same as Fios and they're trying to make it sound like it is.

That being said I don't see fios tv going away any time soon.

I think for the time being you are certainly correct. FiOS, right now, is tiny. Just over 500,000 subscribers. Compare that to Comcast's 36 - 38 million. But I think they are having an impact in some markets where they are starting to have some heavy penetration. I continue to be amazed at how many people I know personally who've switched from dbs or cable to fios. I'd love to see a breakdown of some numbers in areas like the Philly suburbs, or the parts of NJ where they've rolled into (I get the sense that NJ is probably one of their fastest growing markets). I'd love to see a breakdown of overall cable prices in markets where fios has the greatest penetration.

One other thing to consider - it's not enough to just measure the actual price of cable. I think too many people do that and say "well, see, the price hasn't gone down - the competition is doing nothing." I don't buy that. You have to look at what you get for your money. It's clear that ALL systems are working like crazy to provide the most that they can (most HD, most VOD, most number of channels, best PQ). Look back over the past 5 - 6 years, and you see an amazing change happening (hell, 6 years ago digital cable wasn't even available around here, VOD was nonexistent, and the same goes for DVR technology - and oh yeah, how many channels were available? And how many of those in HD?). Competition is making that happen.

Mark F1 posted : I hope that FIOS does very well, a good healthy dose of competition does wonders for many places. But, since when does poor spelling, grammar, and punctuation make someone a troll? If that's the case, many legit posters would fall into that category.
