1. It would if he couldn't send to one or two people, but no mail at all?
2. Coincidence of can't send mail, unplug modem, plug in modem, can now send mail is a little too much. If this was a gateway modem, then it probably has firewall capability that got turned on. That a tech may have overlooked it is far more likely than the coincidence.
1. This
exact SAME thing can be seen using search in sympatico's own forum (I think it was a person by the nick of "chavez321" (or similar) who discovered it. It was shown and proved it was IP related in Bells own forum.
2. The tech would have had him unplug the modem for 30-seconds. Standard procedure at the beggining of the routine. Keep in mind this was WEEKS of the same thing. So yes coincidence when he recieved the new modem.
But I do believe Sympatico reset modems before they re-use them (maybe one got through refer to 2B).
If its as you said, then someone either:
a) went into the firewall settings of the locked out modem and changed it somehow (this person didn't seem savvy enough for this, and if he was, we would have seen a post here on it since this (this forum) is the most likely route to unlock a modem). So this isn't it.
b) The modem he received was in use previously by someone who unlocked it and blocked the Email ports because they wear a tin-foil hat. This is possible I suppose...
So 2b is possible. But not 2a. We would have seen it here and if hey were bright enough to unlock and play, they would be bright enough to reset to factory defaults.
What is the likely-hood of this being 2b though???
So guess you raise the possibility of another scenerio leading to bad quality control on recycled modems. Which is possible...
