If a modem requires the performing of a powercycle operation, I can't see how disconnecting the coax cable can be a factor ? Doing so does not affect or interrupt the power source in any way..
However, I have seen cases of where there are hardware problems with those reset buttons, and it becomes necessary to remove and re-install the battery as well as un-plugging the unit from the A.C. power source in order to clear its MAC addy cache. The reset button is intended to function as a power source interrupter for both the battery and the A.C. input so as to make the constant removal of the battery unnecessary.
Removal of the battery was to be my next suggestion.
