Mini STB

So with Verizon shutting off the analogs in the next few months (yes?), I figure I need another set-top box, and I was thinking of the mini-box to save a dollar. I haven't seen many posts about it... Someone suggested that it had no guide; is that right? And I'm assuming that it doesn't do VOD?

Can I have them ship this, or pick it up, or will they insist on sending someone? And if they do send someone, will they charge for the install?

Thanks.

I haven't got one of those but you can either call or request one via the web. I had an HD STB shipped to me and was able to activate it over the web (though my activation wasn't successful I believe that that was just me

I have two digital adapters. They don't have VOD nor Guide options. I use them with my Tivo series 2 (and get the guide/dvr from it).

In PA they'll ship them, but I don't know if they'll do the same in MD. Guess the best thing is give a buzz.

It's the DCT700

You could also wait for the letter informing you of the elimination of the analogs. They might have options in it of what to do. They will probably be more accommodating then, so as not to piss people off.

Yeah, I thought of that, but my concern is that all the prices are going up, as of... the 20th? Or is it Feb. 18th now? I've heard both... So anyway, if they turned out not to be accomodating, then I could stand to lose my chance to get it at a lower price. But I dunno, it's not even on the price sheet they sent me with the higher rates.

I think just the standard box is going up $1. Is the digital adapter going up too?

The standard STB is going up? I didn't know that ... I knew about the regular TV rates going up $5.

You could also get one of those $40 government coupons for a digtal Qam box ... That should pick up all the clear channels & no momthly fee ...

That is if the tuners in them tune cable QAM256 and not just 8VSB (the OTA format). Then, if it does, all that will get you are the local digitals, pegs, and music channels - nothing more. Everything else on the system is encrypted.

If the digital adapter had some kind of guide on it, it would be great... hopefully Verizon will add this feature at some point. These devices do support programming guides (Comcast uses them and has the i-Guide on them), video on-demand (Comcast allows access to VOD through these), and pay-per-view. Anything like the IMG would probably be way to slow to be functional, but there is most certainly a way to get these devices to run the old IPG. If it weren't for the lack of a guide, I'd replace two of my STBs with these because the standard boxes are so bulky.

It's not a question of the complexity of the IMG that's at issue. It's the fact that these mini boxes don't support IP. And Verizon, unlike Comcast, feeds guide data and VOD via IP. Comcast feeds both of those via QAM.

The letter I got shows the standard STB going from $4.99 to $5.99, and CableCards from $2.99 to $3.99. It doesn't mention the other box types, so I guess they're not changing.

Now the amusing part: I went to the page where you can add equipment, thinking about ordering the mini STB -- and the price for the standard STB there shows as $3.95! (The old, old price, four cents less than the mini.) I don't suppose they'll actually honor that, but it's on their site...
